Whats the major difference?? I am looking for a good used torsion housing for building my new chassis so I can keep my old rolling. For a good used IRS from a bug is about 250. I can get a Swing arm torsion setup for under 100. I also found a type 3 torsion as well for under 100. Whats the difference and is their any disadvantages to using any??

You do not want a swing axel setup on an offroad car. You can use the torsion assembly however you will need to add the IRS Pivots, arms etc. . Definatly go with the type 1 or 3 they are the same. A type 2 is a Buss setup and rarly used offroad.

If those are type 3 than I am under the wrong impression. The base motors are the same except T1 is and upright and T3 is a pancake style. I assummed the torsions were the same. Learn something new everyday.

I'm a type 3 guy. they don't have the motor toter thingy thingy. My son runs type 3 torsion bars which are just a tiny tad fatter. They ride great because you don't have to crank them so tite.You can only tell the difference with a cresent wrench tite on the beetle but will not go on the Square back.Type 3 also has giant drum brakes which carry the same internal parts as a front super beetle.It already has the pivot bolt thingys already.

If you use a type 3 couldn’t you just build something like this or just buy it for $75. My brother has a few type 3 torsions ill see if he wants to sell one. I’m sure it would be cheaper than $100.
