ok so since im new at all of this I bought a (till i tear it downa nd measure everything) 1835cc dual carbed engine.

Image

My question is that the carbs are old and I ran them on my 65 bug for a lil while and it ran ruff...idle and everything...well I was a newby and thought nothing of it well either I have an air leak with the gaskets or the timming is off or both...

Image

anyways with a limited budget but willing to wait to buy the right thing should i rebuild the Dellorto 40 dlra carbs and clean them good or should i save for larger carbs...

in the future I would like to build a 2110cc motor and run a dual carb setup so should i save for better carbs now to run on the 1835cc till i build the 2110cc or would that be too much...

thanks guys!

You should just give me them carbs and buy you a new set.Just kiddin. Those carbs can be jetted for either motor and a rebuild kit never hurts if you dont know their history, but rebuild 1 carb at a time so you can see where everything goes.Id say get up with knowledgeable vw guy and let him look at them.

there is a kit for the dellorto carb that actually changes how the idle jets sit and actually gives about 10% more HP to the engine...and it would accomplish almost the same as a rebuild...I would just have to buy the diaphram seperate...hmmm

well i talked to the vw shop where i got the engine from and he said that for sure i needed the gaskets so i guess i should start with the rebuild...if that does not work then i will go from there?

do any of yall have history with the dellorto upgrade? its on CB's website...it runs $140 and postions something about the jets sideways so they do not get clogged as much

They are talikng about the discharge tubes, they are vertical now and the kit changes them to horizantal.I was about to buy the kit myself but figured i wait and do it to my other set of Dells. If you buy it ,keep us informed on the build.

well see that is the thing i was thinking so i figured that if i run into a problem then i can use the many books and websites to help me out but if i go with the kit then it might put me into an area that i will not be able to get as much help with...

I really dont think that 10% of HP is worth it right now when I have not even gotten my car on the road...and on top of that the car is going to be on the raod more then the trail...but then on the trail it will be around sandy trails...

The part to take your time with when rebuilding any carbs is the soaking and cleaning. Just tearin 'em apart and sprayin a lil carb cleaner and replacing the gaskets wont do that much for them. That WILL help if they are really dirty, but I've had the best luck from soaking them one at a time in a gallon of berrymans for at least 24 hrs after teardown. Doesnt hurt to agitate the can a little now and then , too. Be sure to take the butterflies, shaft, and shaft bearings out of the body of the carbs. I cant fit a whole carb in one can though, I do the main body one day, then the top and smaller parts the next. Wash the carb cleaner off in hot water and blow it all out carefully with a rubber tipped air gun, with moderate pressure. I like to spray a lil WD on it while its sitting dry waiting for the other part to get cleaned. They get a funky dry oxidized lookin film on them otherwise.

The 40's are plenty to feed a street or woods 1835.

yeah i saw it and im thinking of actually getting a metal container at the store that has an air tight lid that i can put 2 of those cans in that way i can try to get more of the suff in at once thanks for all the advice!... i hope over time i can move out of the newbie stigma... i still feel like i have a while to go but then again when i go to my local shop or i talk to people around my town that claim to know their stuff they seem lost when i question why they bought this or this... and also when someone talks alot of game about their motor btu all they can say is who built it and they dont know what is in it...

no one likes that guy and that is why i ask alot on here so i can wear the badge of "built not bought"
