is the stand for a alt. different than a gen?

Yes, the gen stand has a lip on the front side as the alt stand doesn't.

Alt. stand has clearance in this area in blue for where the alt. increases in diameter.

Gen will fit on an alt. stand but an alt. will not fit on a gen. stand.
That cradle area continues out toward the rear of the engine more on gen. stands.
