Any body know of a cvt trans we can use in our buggys?

the jeep compass has one...needless to say it was a fun lil rid down the street for a test drive...i think that salesman will never say the words "yeah just punch it and see how it holds the rpms" when i asked him about the transmission.

The only problem with the cvt you won't have cutting breaks. I was looking into it myself.

Ford Fusion, Escape and Edge were available with CVTs also. If you ran a setup like Passat2800 you could run cutting brakes on it. However, Ford has quit the CVT because it was very problematic.

You can run cutters off a variable pulley belt (snowmobile type) too, if you used one of those rear ends like the sand-minis use. I built a mini woodsbuggy for my son with a snowmobile engine and clutch setup, but it was solid axle. No cutters , no reverse . Variable pulley system worked fine though for main trail cruisin. He kinda had to "brake torque" it though to shoot at hills in it, to get clutch to engage real tight. Let out ANY and he was goin backwards .

i had a trans close to that in an old argo with a big motor,used a belt drive on input and 2 large chaindrive sprockets. hydrostat style with individual controls for each side and full speed reverse. engine was a big snowmobile with clutch, so fast wife whould not let kids in it. fun to skipp accross bean and corn stubble in winter. that was such a heavy duty trans{like mini-dozer}, be neat in rail . wish i had picture of it to show how simple it was and not any bigger than a old potatoe chip tin can. richard

i have also seen where they used the vw dif. they put the spocket where the ring gear was.used some sealed bearings where the vw bearings where, of course this was a open dif. then. ill see if i can come up with a pic.

I guy I raced with a couple years back had a CVT in his buggy... needles to say in did't work too well. he did some more work and was racing the CORR series, but didn't do great. It looked cool and the idea was great, but it wouldnt hold the power and abuse.

Constant velocity Transmission.
It uses a belt and pully system to constintly change gear ratios. No shifting needed, smooth power and always at the right ratio to optimize the engines power curve is the goal. Great for straight line running. Snowmobiles have been using them for years. New 4x4wheelers are starting to use it and it seems nice on the few I've ridden offroad. But if they get wet from slimey mud they slip terribley. Some cars have started ussing them the last cpl of years, but I have not heard anything about how well they are working. The problem I think we may run into is the constant in and out of throttle you use offroad coupled with the weight and power we have. We need one out of a large powerfull car or small truck. And I have not heard of any in that range yet. Answer your question?
