You dont use an offset linkage or side shifter setup to shift a nosecone tranny in a single seater. You just use a vw shifter rod with 2 swivels ( like in a superbeetle steering column) in it, one next to the rear of the seat, and one in place of the shifter coupling on the tranny. Need a good bearing for the rod to go thru at the rear of your shifter box, and another good one right before your first swivel. Gotta know what your doing when you set it up, though , or it will not shift well.

Larry

Even with my new layback seat I only have 8 inches between the nosecone & the seat so I came up with my own design for a shifter since I dont have the room for U-joints. Ill post pics in a couple days. I outdid myself on this one & I only spent 40 bucks on it.

I hope my work is up to everyones standards....LOL 8)

BTW....I dont want to hijack this thread with my build, I just wanted to explain why I cant use the U-joint linkage. I also want to help future builders who run into this problem & are searching the forum for help like me. I keep referencing this build for ideas because I like it & have never built a single before.

Well, we worked on it all day and made a bunch of progress. Mounted the oil cooler, finished the dry sump tank and mounted it, made the battery tray, finished up all the steering, dash, finished mounting the seat and making the support for the back of it, and started on the rear trailing arms and shock mounts. All that's left before powder coating is shock mounts and put the sheet metal on the belly pan.
Didn't get any pics cause it's all pretty small stuff that you wouldn't really be able to see in the pictures! If y'all want pics of any of the individual parts or anything let me know and I'll post em asap. Should see the frame in it's final color in a couple weeks or so!

I got a few pics of the dry sump tank. It was designed by Chuck, but we built it, here they are. I resized em, I have no idea why they're still huge like that, it's the most annoying thing ever.

Image

Image

Here's the filter that goes in the bottom of the tank, just for extra insurance on the motor.
Image

Here's how it mounts in the buggy. On the back side of the bar behind the seat, sitting straight up.
Image

Here's the arms, it's not built, tacked the metal on it. It'll be the exact shape of the metal. They'll be 2x3s.
Image

Let me know if ya need anything else.

Got some more done yesterday. Cleaned up my spindles to make new caliper brackets, mocked up a couple of things, but spent most of the day working on these rotors Chuck made for me.
Here are the before and after pics of the rotors:

This is the front side of one, before cross-drilling.

The back side before drilling:

Front side after drilling what seemed like 5 million holes in it.

The back side:

I'm gonna lighten em up some more by cuttin down the thickness a little more, and drilling holes in between the bolt pattern, then powder coat em.

I'll guarantee that either one of our billy goat buggies will drive right over top of that camel! Bring it to our turf and we'll put it to the test!

Sorry, didn't see your post with ol flatlander arguing! It'll be an AIRCOOLED VW. 2387 stroker. Hopefully before too long I'll build me a 2500.

Made progress today with my new powder coating system I got for Christmas. Finished the rotors up and powder coated the dry sump tank. Cleaned up some other parts, and one of the trailing arms is finished. The frame's just about ready for color, all that's left is to finish the top shock mounts. We'll probably finish them tomorrow.

Here's the rotors. They're PUUUURDY! :D
Image

Both of em hangin up:

Any input, comments, anything is helpful and appreciated. Lay em on me! :D
