If considering cable shifter then use the midshift tranny,, it is much beefier internals. Griffin has figured out a great cable shifter. The advantage to the side shift tranny is it's convertibility to nose cone shifter. If you have a messed up midshift tranny at least save the Ring and Pinion,,it is reusable. In my mind the advantage to the midshift is using it stock to save money over buying aftermarket gears,,,if it has a superdiff .

The dif was there, but it's not a super. Was thinking about using some of the pieces to adapt an 091, six rib super into the 5 rib, but would rather just find a good, er, ideal 6 rib if I knew which one to look for.

Strongest stock 6rib is the midshift,,finding a factory super diff is very rare,,,,for the money,,,midhsift,,add a super diff, contact Griffin for cable shifter. If you hammer on your buggy with big HP, and you gotta couple grand to invest ,build a nose cone . just my 2 cents,,,Im not the one to advise here
"Dave Winterburn"]You say some late model Vanagons. Can you narrow that down some. Right now I plan to use a 5 rib, I've had the nose cone machined so that I can use a bearing retaining plate, installed new output shaft seal and added heavy duty cross shaft.
5 ribs are pretty tough, use it to begin with.
I do have a 6 rib side shift. But when I found it there was no bell housing and it seemed that some one had tried to remove the carier housing but had damaged the main bearing race. It might be junk( a trans jig) or it may be rebuildable, don't know.
Save it for parts. Is shifter in main case or intermediate case?
If I could find one, would you recomend converting to nose cone style shifting, or would you recomend a cable shifter? If so, what style or brand? Thank's, Dave W.
Sideshifter with shifter in main case is stronger one. Cable shifter " Griffin"

Pre 1984 Side shifts are have the same internals as a standard nose cone 6 rib and can be converted. 1984 and later midshift ( the prefered model) are a lot different and can not be converted to a nose cone shift. Unless you have the nose cone shift parts laying around it will cost you more to convert than to use the better mid shift with linkage. The 1984 and later use a much reverse gear set up and is located on the main shaft unlike the crappy reverse gear setup of the earlyer side shifts and all other VW nose cones. The reverse gear is small and utilizes the Input shaft that uses the tiny pressure plate needle bearing and the clutch to support it.

Information correction. Apparently VW went to the water cooled midshift trans in mid 1983 so they made both syles in that year.

I have built several 5 ribs and all of them have a 6 rib diff in them. This is a very good upgrade for the 002 5 rib trans. This diff has larger bearings and larger output splines. Add a super diff and it's even better yet.
Weddle sells a "kit" with all the necessary things you will need to install the 6 rib diff into the 5 rib case. If you have a 6 rib for parts, you already have all the stuff.

I was told a long time ago that there were never any U.S. export vans that had 4 spider diffs in them. They all come from across the pond.

If you run a 2 spider diff and break it, do not try to drive or tow it out with the axles installed.
Always unbolt cvs from stub axle and hang them up out of the way, I've personally ruined 2 ring and pinions because I was too lazy and took the chance.

Thank's all. It's been a while since I looked at the 6. I think the side shift was in the nose cone but it did n't look any thing like the 5'er did. I don't think a hocky stick would work on the set up in the 6. I'll look for part #'s next time I'm at the shop to see what year it is. Maybe you could help me with that. Thank's, Dave W. BTW, it's a west coast Woodsbuggy, or will be one day. It's been 3,1/2 yr's and a lot of freeking cash. Oh, I also have a 3 rib that I plan to hang onto as a spare, but could use the bellhousing and nose cone if it would work for the 6.

Super Diff Question,
I have a 3 rib now and looking for a super diff.
Also looking for a 6 rib side shifter for my next engine upgrade.
Will a super diff for a 3 rib fit a 6 rib or the other way around?
What is the differance between the diff for a 3 rib and a 6 rib?
Norm

(added)
Is it just different drive flanges?

Thanks Chris
So if you were going to upgrade to a 6 rib and 930 cvs, I could get a super driff, 930 flanges, bearings and holders and use them in my 3 rib for now?
That sounds like a plan. I was at the Bug Jam last weekend (I live in FL) and missed a chance to by a 6 rib. There was a guy selling 4 of the and this one person bought all 4 of them. He was loading 2 of them in a wheel barrel when I walk up. (Snooze you loose) I seen one more there with side shift nose cone that must of been made of gold. ($$$$)

I was looking at various suppliers of diffs on the net and saw that limited slip diffs are available. Are these any good? Are they not recomended for steering brake operation?

The only one i am aware of for the 091is the Peloquin. I have researched it and can not find any one that has used one in a Woodsbuggy or with cutter brakes.

My buddy Sherman has one in his CD buggy, you can use your steering brakes to overpower it. It mostly keeps both wheels locked, but I have seen it stuck with only one wheel spinning.
Not so hot for $1080.00

If you break any thing in any vw transmission stop and take the axles out then get a tow. :!: I have seen guys break reverse and keep riding. All those parts are just floating around in the trany.

Does it give him better traction most of the time? Can he use the Cutters like in a standard open diff? Under power or on power? When he does get stuck can he hit the Cutter brake of the spinning wheel to to transfer the power to the non spinning wheel to get him unstuck.

It does alot for traction.
With power it is very hard to overpower the diff with the cutters.
Without power it works fine with cutters.
Stuck yes ,but he usually just clutches it to re-engage diff action.
I had a bug with a lockright once that really worked well, it had an a-arm front that really steered well without using cutters, if yours does, then you might just love it.
If you rely on the cutters alot ,then don't do it.
