Here is my problem I'm trying to figure out. My buggy is just a stock 1600, with a sedan transmission mounted to it, all stock. Took a trip to Turkey Bay last weekend and first good hill I tried to climb, I shattered the inner cv cage on the drivers side. Went and bought a reman from Oreilly's and put it in. Was good until the next day, runnin up hill and over a little jump and shattered the same cv joint on the new axle... So now I realize I need to beef up my setup, found the weak points. So how much stronger is a 930 CV compared to a bus CV? Trying to consider price in all this as well. If I put a heavier CV joint in, will the stock trans be where it breaks next?

If your buying new, go with 930 cv's. They are nearly the same price. Like you said though, beefing up one componet may just lead to the next weakest link. Like the transmission. Is all a risky game. Before you spend soime cash make sure your set-up correctly. Something could be the cause of failure other than week componets.

Like ACole said, might wanna make sure your upper n lower stops are in good shape, your tranny is centered correctly, your torsion beam is not bent, check that you are not exceeding the max angle you can put on car cvs, and your trailing arm is not bent on that side.
930s would be a good investment because they will handle any future drivetrain upgrades, but they are WAY overkill for what you are running right now and should not be necessary if your suspension is set up right.

If he goes 930, he will need new axles too.
In all he will need 4 CV's, 2 axles, 4 boots, 2 new stub axles, 2 transmission drive flanges and all new CV bolts.
I agree with Larry, a bit overkill IMHO for a 1600 and a sedan tranny.

I agree with everyone. 930's are much stronger and provide a lot more travel. If you are going to buy new CV's, Axles and stub Axles, I would defiantly buy 930's.. If you are already running type 2 CV's, then I have had good luck with the race prep type 2 CVs.

However, it sounds like there is some other issues going on. You should not brake 2 CV's in one weekend with a 1600. I would suspect he suspension is either way to high or the tranny is not mounted correctly.

Any other details???

Tranny is bolted up to the torsion with multiple braces and solid mount in front. Torsion springs were set high (35 degrees) but quickly settled to 24-25 degrees, which makes me wonder if they're not getting weak. From what I could tell it happened when the tires would spin and then grab traction is when the cv cages would blow up both times. And always the driver side inner. . . Had no issues whatsoever replacing the shaft, so the I don't think i'm too high as I don't have to stress the cv joint to install the axle?

Ok, can anyone throw me a roundabout price to convert to the 930's? Or to convert to the bus? Still have to change the axle in both?

sounds like ur stops are broke off,car joints should hold up jus fine with a 1600,sounds like the tire is dropping down to low

the easiest thing to do, is to jack up the buggy, and grab the axle shaft. and try to slide it back and forth. you should be able to move it a little bit. if it dont move then your cv is bound up and it will break that way. with the suspension all the way down to your bump stops. try and slide the axle in and out, it should move, usually, i will pull the torsion bars out to do that. i find that this is one of the main reasons cvs breaks, especially if your just landing from a jump. what we usually do is get a couple of extra cvs and a wrench and a couple of rags and stuff them in the ammo box,

What is the angle of the axle at rest and topped out? Car CV's can only go about 12 to 15 deg and it sounds like your angle is way to high. 930 CVs will allow for a higher angle but you will need to buy a lot of stuff...

4 930 CVs (4x$80) = $320
2 930 fanges for the tranny = $70
2 new axles = $180
2 new stub axles (2x$80)= $160

Total Costs to go to 930 CVs is approximately $750..

It probably is just an issue of too much travel. I'll see about putting on some limiting straps to help it out, and will get those angles at rest and full lift sometime when its not raining. 930's I think are alittle out of my price range, might look into just switching to bus cv's, should still be considerably stronger than the car. Do the bus cv's allow more angle also or just the 930's?

Unfortunately Bus CVs are going to cost you same amount... You will still need CV's joints, flanges, stub axles and axles. Type 2 only make sense if you are already running a bus tranny...

your axles should work as car and bus use the same size and spline count

i have seen some stub axles with the lip machined off and then drilled and retapped for the bus size then you have the option of using bus and or car joints and this may also be possible on the drive flanges but not sure about that

if you go this route you will only need 4 bus joints and 4 bus boots that you could possibly find used from somone changing to 930's

Wanna do some trading? Lol.

I think as of right now I'm going to go with bus joints and see if that helps. The 3 rib that was in the for sale section with a link to Ebay is on its way to my house. With a stock 1600, the 3 rib should hold up well I would think, and changing over to bus axles will hopefully keep me from breaking CV's as they'll give me another 5 degrees of articulation. Didn't realize that stock bug axles had as little as they do. Maybe one day I'll move up to 930's, but it'll be when I can afford to do so and I'll have a motor that'll require me to have them then is my intentions.

u still got to make sure u got stops or limit straps or u will break bus joints jus like car

Yeah I'm gonna check it out when it gets here. It didn't sell, so I offered him $50 plus shipping, and he accepted. Didn't want to take too much of a loss if its damaged inside.
