Thanks for the post. I just ran out of carb cleaner and was going to use brake cleaner to remove the cutting oil before welding my x brace in.

WoW! I use brake cleaner and Laquer thinner to clean joints before welding. I let them dry before I weld however only because they are flamable. I did not consider the toxic aspect. I know that Galvanozed steel is pretty toxic to weld so limited exposure for sure.

In my trade (HVAC) R-22 freon also causes phosgene gas when it comes in contact with fire. I had a similar experience soldering a unit in, but not as bad....

I've heard of that too.
Old school mechanic told me they used to check for freon leaks with a propane torch and some sort of tube.
Get the tube around a freon leak and it would siphon the freon into the flame
A leak turns the flame green.

Yep ,thats the old school way to check for leaks. Although its not in production anymore, R-22 has hydrogen and chlorine in it and will turn into a nerve gas (phosgene) when comes in contact with flame....you know people used to sniff freon to get high.

Used to? They still do.

About 2-3 puffs of R22 will knock your socks off if not kill ya.

Very lucky indeed. I did find some information about some brake cleaners that have Tetrachloroethylene in them. It seems that Tetrachloroethylene are in all the NON-flammeable brake cleaners. With that said, NIOSH recommends that tetrachloroethylene be regulated as a potential human carcinogen.

Below is the first responder information on tetrachloroethylene:
