In my need for knowledge. Could some of you tell what gearing your running 1st through 4th and r&p ratio with what hiegth tire and are you happy with your gearing? I,m slowly working towards ecotec swap. I know i need to move to mod 6 rib from my 3 rib so just trying to get all info i can. I also street drive my car. Thanks.

u can make that 3 rib just as strong and run the same gearing as a 6 rib,mine was orginally a 3 rib,i run a 4;13 1st a 2;46 2nd and a1;67 3rd and a stock 4th with a 4;86 r&p,i prefer a 5;42 r&p but broke mine,and i got it all stuffed in a 5 rib case that also has been built by a guy in cali.

A BIG factor you have left out! How heavy is your buggy?

Buggy is 1800 lbs with no one in it and bug motor. So with ecotec and 2 people 2300 maybe.

If your goiing to build and gear a transaxle, start with a good 4:57 r&p, and gear it from there. If you call weddle, or rancho, or any good builder, they will be able to help you select your gears. If you talk to 10 people, you'll hear 10 different opinions, so I would go to someone who builds and or sells the stuff every day.

I run a very similar engine, quad 4. Bone Stock 6 rib (4.57RP) with 31 Goodyear Vtreads. I've got plenty of power for anything I come across. And I havn't had any reason to shift into 2nd on a hill, I'd be going faster the I could steer a this point with my cutters. Anything lower and You would be screeming trying to go down the highway.

Thanks i like the input. I found a method for calculating mph in any given gear with a certain tire size at a given rpm so i have been working on different gear options on paper to see how it works out. I like the idea of climbing in 1st or 2nd depending on hill encountered and i am considering street cruising as well. The formula works like this RPMxTIRE HEIGTH divided by GEAR RATIO divided by FINAL DRIVE RATIO divided by 336 =MPH. I,ll use first in my 3rib as an example. 4000rpm*31inches/3.80/5.37/336=18.08mph using same rpm and tire size 2nd is 33.36mph 3rd is 54.54mph and 4th is 83.80mph. An ecotec will go to 6000 easy but ive been using 5000 for my calculations and i do like the 4.57 better but with steeper 1st and 2nd gears. I will talk to a pro as some point but i like to know what people like in there WOODSBUGGYS. Where do i find what ratios are available?
