So I really nead to give my loaner 009 dist back. Should I spend the extra money on the pertronix ignition or will the empi one work fine.
Or does anyone have any other advice on ignition brands

All of the Empi distibutors I have seen don't work. A worn out 009 worked better in all cases.
What is wrong with your distributor?

MSD, Mallory also have distributors with a known track record but like the Pertonix it costs..

I'm looking into this EDIS kit from boostengineering.com. The price is decent and spare parts would be cheap.
I'm thinking with this system I can leave in the 009 with the pertronix as a back up while running crank trigger ignition.)

I have used the Jacobs system with great results in V8s with points but you still need a good distributor.
distributorless.com

Google megajolt they have do it your self EDIS kits.

The MSD is expensive but it is very reliable and has worked great on my rail...
