I finally got ahold of a set of Thing spindles yesterday and started to put them on, When I bought them I got the arms also, and was told the arms were different than beetle arms, what i previously had. So im puttin it together and for sh*ts and giggles i tried what i had and it all fits. So whats the deal, did mine already have thing arms, or does someone not know what their talkin about or...Idk just wondering whats going on Thanks for any info

I have a set and they look identical to me. I am pretty sure that the arms are the same,,the cv flange is bigger for bus cv's,,,

I think hes talking about the front trailing arms. I've been told you can switch the lower ones side to side to invert them for the top loading thing spindles but I haven't tried this myself.

Thats what Im talkin bout, When i bought the parts the arms looked identical, But wth for $250 for everything I said ok , I just replaced the balljoints in mine so i was curious I used the tops, But havent tried the lowers yet, Im workin in columbus and live near akron so Didnt get a chance but im almost positive like you said just flop it to the other side. So thanks for the bit of help guys and I have to say the height you get with them is just awesome

I copied this from thesamba this will clear it up for you.

I have some comparison pics of the BJ and 181 lower trailing arm and spindles.

You can see the difference in offset of the spindles from the ball joint centrelines.

You can see how the centres of the balljoints are the same for the BJ and 181 spindles

Standard ball joints, you can see the limited surface area that the lower ball joint(top one in this photo) has to work on.

BJ and 181 lower trailing arms

181 trailing arm has thicker wall thickness, upper BJ trailing arm has same thickness as lower 181 arms

BJ, modified BJ and 181 ball joint socket in lower trailing arm.

This shows the difference in the shock absorber mounts, but the axis and centre line of the shock absorber remain the same. The 181 stud is longer and the boss machined back closer to the ball joint to accommodate the longer sleeve on the 181 shocks. The 181 stud has a larger thread.

I can see no difference in the geometry of the 181 and standard ball joint trailing arms. I have easily modified a lower bj lower trailing arm to accept a 181 ball joint.

i used thing spindles with type1 trailing arms. i just swapped the lowers from side to side and pressed in the thing balljoints from the bottom.
this picture shows type 1 trailing arms on my beam.

I've done the swap before. The arms are interchangeable, however, the lower ball joints are a larger diameter and install with the stud in the correct direction for the thing spindles. I actually used car arms and pressed in thing ball joints on the lowers with no problems. You can use either set of arms for the uppers, but the camber adjuster will have to match the diameter of the ball joint stud.
