looks good! You ever try one of turboblue's? Just wondering of a comparison between the 2.

no, I can't bring myself to pay that for something I can build for $20. But, I'm not sure that mine will work. I don't see how it wouldn't.

$20? OK............
How much time did you have in machining the bushings and cross shafts?
What would you charge to duplicate it? More than $20 I bet.
Time is money and your version took you some time to build.

If you didn't see how the one we sell is built, could you have built yours?
Looks almost like a direct copy other than the material.

Lot of time and effort went into designing the one we sell.
Originator of this shifter is a couple guys in EC Indiana.
We and others, Brian included, market it for them.

I'm not knocking it at all! I Wouldn't build it for $20 for anyone, and I do have alot of time in it. I wasn't trying to piss anyone off, but if I can build ity myself, I sure as hell won't spend that much on it. I have PLENTY of other things to spend my money on. The linkage that you sell is a slick set-up, and I did look at it prior to building mine. If I didn't have the tools and stuff that I have I would have ended up with that one. I'm sure you sell buggy frames too, so does it offend you that I build my own?

I don't blame you for building one yourself if you have the material, time and skills.
You kinda made it appear that I was somehow gouging people at the price I sell mine for.
Anyone that knows about machine work and design time should know either one of those shift linkage setups would cost way more than $20 labor included.

I don't care if you build frames, matters not to me.
Your frames are nice, one off creations anyone would like to have.
But you probably can't build a frame and sell it for what Berrien, BeeLine and the other commercial builders sell their's for either.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I build everything I can, because I can. I think racebug is the same type of builder, because he can.
Racebugg, dont forget to add a bushing to support the back of the shift rod behind the socket

Nope, sure couldn't! Not the knockdowns anyway. I don't think I could build just a single seat basic frame for under $1500 and consider it worth it. I bet I have 300-400 hours in building a complete buggy, and figure that on the low low side for labor cost at $50 an hour.... Nope. not gonna happen

What is so special about these side-shift transmissions? I am running what used to be a early-type side-shifter transmission, when I bought the one I have now, it was already converted over to nosecone and the previous owner told me it used to be a side-shifter. I know that there are some years that you can do this, but why the late-model side-shifters that you have to spend $$$$ on the brackets and stuff to make the shifter work, I just don't see the pro's on having these types of setups when you can go simple like running the shifter rod straight back to the transmission or run the setup that I have and it is clean and simple. I am not trying to rain on anybody's parade, but I just want a better understanding the pro's and con's on this. Thanks

Yeah I had this exact problem.

As for the side shift, a cable set up is $550!

All of the gears are said to be stronger. The reverse is ALOT stronger

You betcha........

The early air cooled side shift is just like an 091 and those can be converted to an end shift with the nose cone, intermediate housing and the shift rails.

The water cooled is it's own animal.

There are a couple different versions too.
I've heard the latest versions have a factory super diff and 4 spiders but I can't confirm that.

Check this link for the numbers, you have to scroll a bit.

can you just use the 091 reverse gear in a standard 6rib nose cone style trans?

Guess I don't understand the question.
091 is a 6 rib.

If you are asking if the water cooled vanagon tranny reverse stuff will work in a 6 rib, no.
Completely different animal.

I've seen this used to shift a side shift and it worked real good and was simple, but for the life of me I can't find the pic, so here is my feeble attempt .
It consists of 2 flat plates attached to top of tranny, drilled for the main shift rod down the center of tranny.
To that rod is welded a shift arm with a hole drilled for pivot, forget if it goes on top or bottom of main shift rod for correct shift pattern.
The pivot area should be fairly wide contact point to prevent to much slop in shifting.
Then an L shaped bracket is made to connect to shift lever on side of tranny and connected via pivot bolt to shift rod.
PS... I'll keep looking for the actual picture.
