Hello
I am trying to find out how much I might spend on buying or building a basic buggy. I have spotted an old super beetle for sale that has been sitting since I moved to where I am at now. The guy wants $2000.00 for it. It has been eight years since I moved here and it probably sat there long before I moved. I just want it for the engine,transmission,axles,steering,etc. Do any of you guys know of some thing better out there? I cant spend a lot of money now but can invest more it to it later.

From what I understand superbeetles aren't good for turning into buggies or baja's. Something to do with the suspension. If your looking to go cheap your better off finding a used buggy that needs some work and strip it down and fix as needed. If your patient there are several great buggies that show up for sale on here that are cheap compared to what it would cost to build.

Thats what I have heard about the super beetles. Can you direct to buggys for sale on this site? I saw your buggy at the d&k hill climb on april 11th I think It was. That thing is pretty sweet! What engine did you use?

Alot depends on what you want to spend.

I have a 1.9 saturn engine in mine. about 120 hp stock. Mine runs great but it seems like the subaru conversion is very popular right now.

Darrel who owns D&K has a couple of very nice buggies for sale last I heard.

I would definatly look around for a complete Buggy that needs some TLC. It will be cheaper in the long run. Look for one with the following to get you off to a good start:
1776 Minimun size VW or just about any Water cooled engine IE; Subaru, honda, Ford.
3, 5 or 6 rib Transmission
IRS rear supension
Link pin front supension
"V" thread rear tires

I bought a cheep running project buggy for $560 on e-bay. It was a long way off from a good woods buggy but better start then a Super B. For $200 grand you can get one that will go into the woods when you buy it. Keep an eye on here, e-bay, and craigs list. Found my current one on the side of a road in a corn field for sale, lol.
