I pulled my flywheel because I thought my rear main was leaking a little. The rear main seal looks fine but the o-ring in the flywheel looks bad will this cause a 4” round oil puddle after one week of sitting?

I would think so. 4" round circle of oil is probably less than an ounce. Did you check to see if its coming from the trans?

Yeah, it doesn’t smell like gear oil. The pressure plate feels like it has a light film of oil on it also.

There was so much oil on the back of the block it is hard to tell where it is coming from. I check the cam plug and it feels tight and looks sealed. I’m pretty sure it’s the flywheel o-ring because the old one is flat and cracked.

Thanks for the info guys.

Flywheel O Rings rarely leak. It is most likely the cam plug if you don't think it's the main seal.

ALSO CHECK THE ALIGN BORE IN THE ENGINE I HAVE HAD QUITE A FEW ENGINES IN THE 30+YRS OF BUILDING THE VW ENGINE GET THE PISTON ON TDC AND LIFT UP AND DOWN ON FLYWHEEL IF ITS THE ALIGN BORE YOU WILL HAVE PLAY THIS WILL LET THE OIL BYPASS THE REAR SEAL.AND THE VW AIR COOLED IS KNOWN FOR THIS PROBLEM.
