I have a 1600 dual port engine. All ready has a 2bbl empi carb on it. Stock besides that. (as far as I know).
Well after really puttin my buggy thro the paces today I have seen it lacks on the power. I dont have a lot to spend so how can I get a bit more power out of my 1600? I was thinking a cam. But what cam? I want more bottom end/torque. Stronger valve springs pushrods and mabey some head work if buget will allow it.
I really want to bulid this engine up some. What all would I need to make it a 1800cc or a 2000cc? Allso after I buid this thing will it break down on ever ride like more people say it will? I know a man has to keep there ride up and I do with reg oil changes and all that good stuff.
Thanks you all for the help and the great site...

if your going to split the case to put a cam in then go ahead and have it cut for bigger jugs because your going to have to buy new ones anyway might as well spend the money now and do it right or you will regret it later.and know you will not btreak down every weekend unless you do a bad job building it or you just dont take care of it.chad

this is hard on a budget, but u can buy ratio rocker arms,a hotter ignition,(electronic)maybe a power pulley,u could put 88 mm jugs on it without machine work to make it a 1679,i think its been along time

I am with Gasman on this one. A set of 94 MM Pistons and cylinders will give you a 1915 with stock crank. Put a 110 grind cam and at least a single 44MM Weber carb on it. This makes a nice afforable package. Any thing less will be a disapointment if your looking for power.

you need to have the case and heads cut out to fit 94mm cylinders up from the 90.5mm and 92mm size cylinders

nothing but the holes that the bottom of the cylinder sets in and have heard of having to resurface the flat sealing surface and dont forget about the heads have to be opened up as well ......... any good automotive machine shop that has dealt with an aircooled vw should know exactly what needs machined.........

i say 1915 is the way 2 go not very expensive depending on what u can use off ur old motor u can build one for around 1200 dollars. the have plenty of power, specially for new riders, and sound great with the right cam

1915 is a real good motor, i ran that for years. but nobody mentioned anything about welding the plate behind number 3 cylinder. i have heard of people packing it with weld stick, but i dont know about that.

Im goin with the 1915. Id rather go ahead and split the case's and bulid a decent sized engine. Also I wanna lear more about these little vw's. Also I am thinking of the eagle cam off road seriers. Would this be a good cam? If not what would be a good one? A good lumpy sound is also a pluse.lol Would I have to upgrade my valve springs pushrods and all that? I am goin to try to order my parts tomaro..This stuff is my graduation gift from my mom and dad..Also would my 3 rib handle the power?

i would go with engle 110 cam and 1.25 rocker arms with solid shaft and the 94mm jugs new bushings in the rods also i would 8 dowel the flywheel witha chromoly gland nut and stage2 kennedy pressure plate with kushlock disk and make sure to have the entire rotating assembly balanced from the pulley all the way to the pressure plate and throw on a set of 44 idf WEBERS with 6in. filters a tri-mill exhaust and with an added external oil cooler and filter it should last a long time a be decent runner to boot as far as the tranny goes it depends on how hard u ride what size and type tires un run and how good u are with the clutch :D

Roy's buddy Dave was running a 1915 with a split duration cam and that thing was the best running 1915 I have seen. You might want to contact Roy about the cam. Also I've driven a 1915 with a vz15 cam and torque was great and no flat spot like the 110.

If you buy all new parts for a couple 100 more dollars you could build a stroker. I build a 1915 with all new parts except the case and had 2000 in it. After driving a 2332 I will never build a small motor. Then you will have to upgrade the drive train also.
