You can get a homebuilt title for a buggy but I would recommend against it. You pay taxes on it being a 2009 model if you title it in '09. A local guy did it in '05, his tax bill when he went to tag it in '06 was over $700! I've got a '74 super beetle title for mine and taxes ran $24 for sticker and all. Insurance is also cheaper but you need to make sure your company knows that it is a railbuggy, "drive insurance from progressive" is what I have. $116 for 6 months.

i would not recomend the home built title either.
i beleive in kentucky they require u 2 have a windshield, windshield wipers, and they check the whole buggy over very good. thats lot of hoops 2 jump through. there is people out there that would be happy 2 sell u a title and a vin number. just look around a little

Might try theses folks for insurance, too:
http://www.jctaylor.com/
Less than $100 a year for $20,000 of full coverage.
I got a couple buddies who've used this on their street rods and show cars.
One of them had to file a claim, they paid up quick, treated him good and didnt raise his rates. Miles driven each year is limited, though.

Make sure you are getting a clean, in-state, title. Check to make sure the back taxes have been paid up and that they haven't junked the title previously. Also make sure that no one other than the seller has signed the title or filled out any other information. You have to get the owner to get a duplicate title and it takes several weeks, better off starting with one that has no marks on it whatsoever. If you get an out of state title you have to have it inspected to get a KY title, the sheriff checks the vin tag against the title to make sure they match so be sure you get the vin tag from the dash and have it mounted on your buggy.

I have bought several for $50 but it has been a while back. I have heard of them going for $200 for a "sign on the line and you're done" clean title. I'd offer $100 for a title with no back taxes that hasn't been junked, and is from KY. If he won't take it offer a little more.

Buying just a title is illegal in most states.
You wouldn't want a Beetle title on your buggy anyway if that is what it is.
Have a problem or accident and if your insurance company thinks you have a Beetle, they may not cover you if they find out it's a buggy.

In indiana a buggy title, sometimes called a builders title, is usually acquired by taking a bill of sale with a picture of the buggy to the license branch/local BMV.
The BMV gives you a paper to have a LEO (law enforcement officer) to sign off on saying your buggy has no ID numbers.
You take that back to the local BMW.
State BMV will mail you a set of ID numbers to stamp on your chassis.
Do that and have a LEO come back out and reinspect certifying those numbers are on the chassis
They sign off again.
Take that back to the BMV.
State BMV will send you a title in the mail, take that to the local BMV with proof of insurance to get plates.
You do not pay personal property taxes here on vehicles that have plates.
To get a lower cost plate the bill of sale needs to state the year of the buggy.
Older ones pay very little for plates.

Could not have said it better myself. Using a Beetle title is just asking to have your Buggy confiscated. I know some of you have gotton away with it for years. You are just lucky!

Same basic procedure here except you pay property taxes and they don't take your word for the model year, it is titled as an '09 if you did the paperwork today and built it 20 years ago, and you pay taxes on a new car. I've been pulled over multiple times here in KY and they never bat an eye at what I have. You guys need to quit electing people who pass ignorant laws about what you can drive.

I've got "Drive" insurance from Progressive, they have a pic of the buggy and know exactly what it is. My insurance card says, "'74 volkswagen railbuggy".

I have lived in VA and now I live in GA. My original title and VIN is from VA. On the title, the make is "Special Construction" and the Model is "DuneBuggy".

It was a pain in the butt to get through the paperwork of registering for a Title but I believe it is worth it at the end. In some states (like VA) you get titled as the year you apply for the registration. However, in other states (like GA) you can get titled as the year of the engine. You will need to check with your state.

Another thing to think about beyond taxes is your local emissions. Anything title after 1996 must have the electronic emissions controller.

Since I already had a 1988 VA Title, I just transferred my title to GA and I did not have to do anything but get a new tag.

Good Luck.

Here is some info from the Kentucky DMV site.. http://www.dmv.org/ky-kentucky/custom-built-cars.php
***********************************************************************
In Kentucky, registering your custom-built car can be the same as registering any other vehicle, or it can be a much more tedious process―it all depends on where the car was built.
Top1) Out-of-State Custom Vehicles

If your car was custom-built out of state―good news. You'll only need to follow the same registration process as you would for any other vehicle (submitting a completed Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title/Registration and all applicable taxes to your County Clerk's office).

Note that if you bring the custom-built vehicle to Kentucky and don't have a title for it, Kentucky won't allow you to operate the vehicle legally. You'll need to contact your previous state and go through its process of getting a title for a custom-built vehicle before you can get a title in Kentucky.
Top2) In-State Custom Vehicles

If you custom-built the car in Kentucky, you'll need to take a few more steps:
* Gather all labor receipts and invoices, as well as receipts and any former titles from parts purchased.
* Obtain a notarized, detailed labor statement from the person who built the vehicle.
* Complete an Application for Motor Vehicle Number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
* Take all of the above to your County Clerk's office to be issued a VIN.
* Once you have a VIN, head to your sheriff's office to have the vehicle inspected and ensure there's no VIN already assigned.
* All information will be sent to the Division of Motor Vehicle Licensing, who will then send both you and your clerk an approval notice.
* Once you get your approval, take it to the clerk. If everything matches up, your title will be sent to you in the mail.
