what carb you running on that how about intake leaks what little thing are you talking about the tube on the side of the shroud it should be hooked onto the little pipe on your oil fill so it blows cool air in to help keep the motor cooler i think also points or electronic distributer you have spark if you have spark spray carb cleaner or starting fluid around your intake boots and base of your fuel rail where it bolts to the head i had this problem where it would not start if you didnt do this may need new gaskets as far as your carb check your idle jets if it or they are clogged its hard starting when its cool

Well you have to be more specific as to whats going on for help. Is it cranking and poping? Then your timing might be off, Is it cranking and just spudering? Then prob have a fuel or ignition prob.

Some other questions that might help..
Have you ever had it running?
Did it just sit all winter and wont start this year?
Did you change anything since it last ran?

Do you have a fuel pump hooked up? The only time I've ever moved a gas tank to get one to run is when the fuel pump went out and I let the carb gravity feed by moving the tank higher than the carb.

Is the thing with the air coming out of it on the top passenger side corner of the fan shroud? If so, you can block it off. It is a line that the Beetle uses that you don't need on a buggy, most of the time they are removed and leave a little spot that looks like a dipstick might fit in.

That explains a lot more. I am sure you will get some great advice from people smarter than me but I will give you my initial ideas. If you are getting backfiring and a flame, I would start with the order of the new wires and make sure nothing got cross or mixed up. Then i would check the timing.

If it is backfiring and throwing a flame, you have fuel and spark, it is just not happening at the right time.

Yeah sounds like timing. The white "smoke" coming out of the oil cap means its Hot. Do you have an oil cooler?

Blowby, compression is getting past the rings. Time for a hone and rering in the very near future.

What is your timing set at?

Did you clean the carb after it sat all winter?
