Im back! :D Sorry I have posted in a while but things have been a little messed up around here. Went about 5 months without even seeing the baja, but Im back on it now. Got in a bunch of parts the other day from Sumitt and the local bug shop so I should be real close now. Gonna go work on it Sunday. Wish me luck!

The local place I used is called Space Coast Imports. http://www.spacecoastimports.com/Not sure how familiar you are with the area but its on the south side of the Melbourne airport on Nasa. Used to be Hot Bugs till VW had a shit about people using VW related names. They have most everything you need in stock but there prices are kinda high. Good when your in a jam I guess.

Well for the last couple of months I have been bustin my ass, spending every extra dollar I had trying to get the baja done. Took it yesterday to the local bug shop to have them break it in and check everything out. I found out today that somehow water has gotten into the motor and screwed everything up. So it is going to take a couple more grand to get it done. So as much as it pisses me off, I am done with it. I will be posting more info in the classified section for anyone that is interested.

Finish it. After all that work you will regret selling it. Your build has been an inspiration to me. Thats the coolest east coast baja I've ever seen. I'm slowly building a semi tube chassis a arm baja with a 2.5 subi.

Well after a few days of pouting about the motor being full of water I decided to get my head out of my a$$ and do something about it. So we pulled the whole thing apart and the damage was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Basically just needed to clean up all the parts and put it back together.

I finally managed to get the baja started today. I also got the carbs tuned good enough for the car to idle. I didnt let it idle for long since I havent broke in the motor yet. I was hoping to do that today, but didnt feel that safe holding the throttle at 2000rpms for 20 minutes without someone there that knew something about vw engines. Hopefully I will get that done this week and be able to take it for its first drive this weekend!

Does anyone know of a good shift linkage coupler? I have the poly one on there right now but it seems to slip from just going through the gears a few times.

Coupler is determined by shift tube configuration.
Top is for late shift tube with the horizontal hole.
Bottom is for tube with set screw dimple.

Well I finally got the baja running and took it for a little test drive. You should have seen the grin on my face! 8) There are still a few things to work out but its getting there. A friend brought over a camera so here are a couple of pics.

Im a little pissed that my exhaust is starting to rust after paying so much for the alumicoating but what do I expect after it has sat outside for the last 8 months or so

I thought the shock bodies were aluminum so I tried cleaning them up with a little scotchbrite. As you can see, bad idea. Can I just get some high heat paint and paint them?

Looks bad ass. My buddy spent $200 to have his exhaust jet coated, it looks pretty bad after 2 years and only riding a few times. Just get some aluminum high temp paint for the shocks. Then they will look aluminum.

Thanks guys! Its really great seeing it so close to being done. Money has been tight so I dont get to do too much to it each week.

I ran a tube for the throttle cable last week and got rid of the pain in the ass dzus fasteners. It still looks like they are there but I used a bevelled flat head bolt. Holds it tight and goes together faster. I guess I must have screwed up mounting the dzus fasteners.

The timing is set and it fires right up. It just seems to be having some problems with the carbs. I imagine they are just jetted wrong. It revs up to about 2k during startup and after about 5 secs goes down to about 800rpms. Then after about 45 secs it revs back up to 2k for another few secs. Runs good when your in the throttle but pops when you let off.

Still having some issues with the brakes and the shifter. The brakes work ok (well maybe a little less than ok), and the shifter is just a little too sloppy for what I would like.

Taking it to a friend of a friend that knows Dells and gonna have him mess with the carbs this weekend. I will try to get some more pics and let you know how things go.

Glad to see you stuck with it to finish it, Jim. It is hands down the most badass lookin Baja I ever seen!

Sounds like your carb problem might be an air leak at one of your manifolds.
