Alright guys, haven't been on here in a while, but here's the deal. We have a chevy V6 with a kennedy adaptor, and a side-shift VW transmission, with a 3-rib transmission bellhousing on it. Then we have a diesel rabbit starter with a kennedy adaptor on it to fit the transmission.
Basically, we put the flywheel/ring gear and clutch/pressure plate on the engine then bolted the engine up to the tranny.
Then we tried to put the starter in (it went in fine before the flywheel was on the engine) and the starter shaft won't go into it's support hole in the bellhousing. It's almost as if the flywheel is a lttle bit too big and it's hitting the starter gear stop.

Any ideas or prior experience with this?

No personal experience with adapters, but I wonder if Kennedy sent you an adapted T4 flywheel instead of type1? Do you have a flywheel you know is T1 layin around you could compare it to?

No offense Larry, but I believe the ring gears are the same between a type 1 and a type 4. The only difference should be in the bellhousing and input shaft. So you may need to use a 091 or 6 rib bellhousing with the starter and adapter you have for the starter.

I didnt know ring gears were same. I thought t4 might be a hair bigger. The clutch surface is bigger , aint it? 220mm or sumthin?

It had 200mm stamped in the flywheel, so I know it's the right one, regardless.
As for the bellhousing, the starter with the adaptor worked fine when there wasn't a flywheel in it (the starter shaft fit in the bellhousing fine, etc.), so it's not a problem between the adaptor and the bellhousing. And I told Kennedy that I had a 3-rib bellhousing when I ordered the kit.
Sounds like I need to talk to Kennedy and see what they say.

I guess they aren't exactly the same but the same diameter and number of teeth. The type 4 came in 200, 210, 215, & 228mm. I run the 228mm and it holds great.

Without seeing it, I don't know what else to guess-- gotta be either flywheel, starter, bellhousing, or adapter.

I'm personally thinking it's something with the starter. I just sent a lengthy email to Kennedy asking what they thought, so we'll see.

Get that thing done, I figured by now you'd be rollin with me,Koko n Yankee to D&K sometimes! We found a nice little spot only a couple miles from the house with some STEEP stuff for test n tune. Only 50 acres, but its straight up right off the trailer and we got permission! You need to check it out.

Larry, dude, you have no idea. We haven't worked on this thing in almost a year probably, lol. We finally got it moved down to the new workshop, so the fun can begin. We either need a new front beam, or we're gonna try to bend the one we have back straight. That's the only thing keeping it from being a roller.
Also, that's awesome there's a place close, but this beast isn't going to be much of a hillclimber I'm afraid. It's got too much ass weight! Hopefully we can get our asses in gear and get it going by the end of summer. School is for real kicking my ass though.

We actually figured it out. I just had to grind a little bit more off the transmission (sounds bad, I know) to get the starter to line up better.
It's in there now and I'm getting the wiring harness ready to fire up the 3.4 V6! Freaking excited. I hope we're riding it this summer!

let me guess. the body of the starter was hitting the side of the trans case right over the axle.

I didn't think that's what it was because I was able to get it in before without issue, but I guess the addition of the flywheel changed something.
