I haven't had a true woodsbuggy for 2 years (the racing is a horrible drug-like addiction). Now its time to start over. I bought this roller from a buddy with plans to cut it up and make a family-fun woods buggy. I really miss making alot of the stuff for woods buggies that I can't really get away with making for the race car (or don't want to till I have time to try them out in the woods). I've got alot of ideas that I plan to try out on this car that I have been waiting a while to do. I plan to make it into a 3 seat car, or possibly a 4 seat. My son is only (almost) 2, so I think a small seat will be easy to fit in without making the car too long. I am going to try to keep the budget under $2000 for the build(not including buying the roller), and use a bunch of pars I have been saving up for years

I cut the "race brace" and everything else out of the front of it last night. I started with the saw-zall, then realized that it sucks, and got the smoke wrench (plasma cutter) back out

Kinda bitter-sweet on the car.. I started to tear down the the rear end to cut the torsion housing out and realized that the trailing arms were not bent (I thought they were). The spring plates were not bolted to the arms correctly. I was looking forward to converting it to straight pivot with some 25" arms and air bags, but now I think I'm going to run it with with the 2x3s for now. It will save alot of work!

Just when you thought you could justify spending some money and you get kicked in the teeth. This will give you time to get it going and run a season. Now you have a project pre-planned for next winter.

Do you plan on using a 9" rearend for that truggy? I always wanted to build a front or mid engine rail with a solid axle and auto trans. The parts are so easy to find, its just a weight distribution and size problem. I have followed a few on race-dezert.com and glamisdunes.com and they are very cool.

I converted the stub bearings over to a tapered bearing which is ALOT cheaper the the vw bearings, and I think is alot stronger


I had to make a little spacer, then turn down the big spacer in order to get the right preload on the bearings, and still keep the axle nut torqued correctly.

Well setting the bar again I see. I too have been wanting to break the old woods buggy out of retirement. I have alot of upgrade parts from the race progam drop spindals, fox shocks, power steering, 3x5's, 930 and axles. I need a trans though my old buddy took it to haspin once and killed the trans. I traded for a 1915 last year and will start with that as my woods motor is now our back up race motor. You get that finished and the wife will have to run class 12 in it this year. I heard my new secret cam and prototype heads are out of the bag. Keep the pics coming I have cabin fever.

I was up at drews this weekend rootin around in your race motor I told my wife she can race it as long as she can't beat me...., it will get ugly then. Well I got alot done this weekend.
I trimmed a little more "excess tubing" off the frame


my wife got the sleeper trans cleaned up and ready to go in

I have been wanting to do that on my Buggy just never got around to it. What are the part numbers on the bearings and races. BTW nice quick change on the lathe. Been wanting to put one on mine however another one of those things I never got around to lol.

Thanks, ody! The # on the bearing.... 30206j and it is a "koyo" bearing. get 4 of those! I finished mounting the rear brakes last night, I had 4 nissan calipers sitting on the shelf from my old woods car, so I still have 2 spares

I also picked up some front brakes (for combo spindles) from a buddy that I race with for $300. One of the rotors is bent a little, but I think I can manage to smash it flat

I have an unfinished chassis that has the tapered bearings in it. I was afraid to use it because I thought that I would either put too much preload on the bearings and ruin the bearings quickly or not enough preload and wear out the spline on the hub because it is not tight enough. Why is this setup better and how do you know the right amount to torque the axle nut to keep everything tight without damaging the bearings?

After thinking about this a little more, I realized that the center spacer length is crucial and it will determine the amount of preload on the bearings. So how did you determine the correct length of the center spacer?

I just kept tryin it, turn a little more off and try it again, till I liked it. I ran a set of these bearings for 2 years in the woods and raced a whole season with them, that is why I think they are stronger. And I can get a whole set of them for the price of one vw bearing
