I was just reading on the optima website.. Everyone says always go with the red top. But on the website it says the yellow is like the red top and blue top mixed in one. With high cranking amps and deep cycle ability. Anyone got any info or input on this..

I would go deep cycle reguardless. Before I got my Oddesy battery I was going yellow top for mine.

cold cranking amps about the same, but reg. cranking amp about 130 higher on the red top

They got the yellow with 900 cranking. I think this yellow one is newer. Cold cranking at O degrees is 900 and at 32 degrees is 1125. And the red top is 800 and 980. Its like $100 more though..

the yellow top that is that high is comercial battery. i'm going by the spec sheet on their web page

Oh i see. Still sounds like a stronger battery. I think it has a extra coil or something.. Scince i went with a suby instead of a high compression vdub i think im going with a yellow top. Im gonna have a winch and a bunch of lights.. Just having the deep cycle will give me some comfort.. Even if i never have to use it..

I have looked at them but never wanted to spend the bucks. Last year I met vwtravis. He starts his with a garden tractor battery. That made me decide to stick with my $39 Autozone battery.

Karen has a red top in her rail it seems to work fine I on the other hand have a pos auto zone bat

A "regular" autozone duralast battery lasts about 5 years in my buggy, which is pretty good, imo. I bought the red top optima a couple years ago (on sale for 109) just to see. It does crank it faster and time will tell how long it lasts, but most of the people I have spoken to say about 9 years.. Twice the price, twice the life?

I have had red tops in all my buggies. No problems yet. That is not to say that a standard battery isn't just as good. I believe it is personal preference and what you can afford......Kinda like a motor!

All in all I like them because they are spill-proof and with the boy in the buggy with me that is important.

i run a yellow top in buggy an 2 red tops in my cummins like them both they are both good but i am now buying intimidator batteries from decka battery and they are alittle cheaper and are basicly same design and i no that noga the local ambulance company uses all them in there vehicles...just my thoughts tho

my red top is 8 yrs old no sign of a problem

I researched this when I bought a 4000lb winch for my rail. I was thinking if my buggy isn’t running and I need to winch out of or up something big what do I need. I don’t really need high cranking amps to crank over my air cooled vw, maybe 650. What I really needed was the highest reserve capacity I could afford. The reserve is how long the battery will last without being charged while being used. The blue top offers the highest reserve of 155 minutes but it costs over $200. So I went with the yellow top with 120 minute reserve and I think I got it for less than $160. Ask any of the guys I ride with how much I use the winch with the buggy off. I killed the battery once and that was because my idiot light burnt out and the battery wasn’t charging for 3hrs so when I winched a guy out the buggy wouldn’t stat back up.

Also read this has a little more info. Maybe I shouldn't have bought an optima.

I have a new Optima battery story. When I bought my rail I put a cheap Autozone battery on it, no problems with it at all, I just wanted a Optima for the sealed bit and heck they are cool. I got a red top more $$$ = better don't it. Anyway after sitting for a couple of days buggy will not start, I figure well it probably wasn't fully charged to start with. I jump it off and go for a ride of about 4 hours park the buggy and 2 days later same thing. I have a battery disconnect switch because I park the buggy in the basement so rule out a voltage draw, I check the charging system no problems. I load the 2 week old high dollar boat anchor up and cart it back to where I got it. The guy behind the counter tells me and i quote " These are a HIGH PERFORMANCE battery and you should keep them on a trickle charger when the are not being used" Then he proceeded to show me some of the chargers he had for sale. I asked if two days was too long to let it set, I got the high performance speech again. I thanked him for his time and left. Went home and put the old autozone special back on the rail, it had been sitting outside on the ground for two weeks and the buggy starts right up. I unloaded the POS Optima to some ricer for less than half of what I paid for it. Since then I have asked around at several battery stores and all told me to stay away from Optima's. Industrial Battery here in Knoxville, Tn. told me that they had quit selling them because they got tired of pissing off their customers. This is my story take it for what its worth, and as always your mileage may vary.

I just went outback and took my Redtop out of the railbuggy. It has been sitting dormant there for 5 months, I pulled it out and put it in my truck and it cranked my v8 like nothing. I wouldn't use anything but an optima not for looks or coolness but the fact that it is sealed and will never leak I really like.
