LONG STORY SHORT,I HAD DREWS REBUILD A 1600 TO A 1641,THEY SAID THEY DYNO'D IT AND RUNS FINE!WHEN I SHOWED UP TO PIC UP IT HAD A CHIPPED TOOTH OFF THE FLY WHEEL THAT I LUCKILY SAW AND THEY PUT ANOTHER ONE ON. I BOLTED THE MOTOR UP TONIGHT AND HOOKED UP THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP TO THE CARB AND IT WAS LEAKING FROM THE LOWER BUTTER FLY ROD THAT RUNS THRU THE CARB,BUT I STARTED IT ANY WAY TO SEE HOW IT RAN, THE SECOND TIME I TURN THE POWER ON TO IT AND TRY TO START IT, IT SEEMED LIKE THE MOTOR WAS LOCKED UP AND IT IS DUMPING GAS OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE MOTOR,WHERE IT APPEARS THE JUG HOUSING AND THE HEADS MEET! I'M THINKING THE CARB IS JUST FREEFLOWING WAY TO MUCH GAS THRU IT BUT WHY WOULD IT BE LEAKING OUT OF THE BOTTOM LIKE THAT? I HAVENT CALLED THEM YET BUT JUST WANTING TO GET SOME OPINIONS! AND ONCE I UNHOOKED THE COIL AND FUEL PUMP AND TRYED TO CRANK FOR AWHILE IT BLEW A BUNCH OF GAS OUT AND FREEDUP,IS THAT CAUSE THE ENGINE IS TO FULL OF GAS AND NOT ABLE TO GET COMPRESSION OR WHAT? THANKSS FOR ANY INPUT!I'M PISSED

Hey I'd be pissed too!
Sounds like the needle valve isn't seating correctly causing your cylinder(s) to fill up w/ gas. That's why it's hard to turn over... Can't compress a liquid, not like that anyway. I'd call them asap, or hell, I'd be on their doorstep when they opened in the morning. The broken flywheel is a bad sign to start with. Did the engine come w/ the carb? Or did you install it? Also sounds like the head isn't sealed properly. Can't see why it would leak gas between head and jug. I've never had any dealings w/ Drews, but sounds pretty shitty...
Also be sure to check the crankcase oil for gas.

Sounds like you have to much fuel line pressure. You may have to put on a regulater.Don,t worry,Brian Drew is a good guy and if he done something wrong he will make it right.I have been dealing with him for 15 years and he always treats me good.Did you buy new heads or use your old ones.If you used your old ones then it sounds like they need trued up.MIKE

I agree with needing a regulator, most electric fuel pumps will put out at least double what a carb needs to run. If you put on a fuel injection pump you could be feeding it 40-50psi when it only wants 2-3psi.

If you hydrolock it you could be in for an expensive repair bill, bent rods are usually the best you can hope for.

Call Brian,He will do whatever it takes to get you going even if its something he didn't do.I would agree that it has too much fuel pressure causing the needle seat to leak.Again call Brian, don't drag his name through the mud here before you even give him a chance to make it right.

If you didn't contact Brian and let him have a chance to resolve your problem, you won't get much sympathy from here.

Turn your CAPS lock off too......It's the internet equivalent of SHOUTING.

I bet it's the fuel pump? Let us know how it goes?

What fuel pump are you using? I run a Holley Blue fuel pump and it cranks out alot for what I need and had to use a by-pass regulator to keep the pump running freely and run a return line from the regulator back to the tank and the by-pass will let only the set pressure go through to your carbs. It works very well for me since I got the by-pass regulator. It also sounds like that the pump blew the needle seats and/or it got stuck open letting all the gas run down to your cylinders, like everybody else says....it was hydrolocked and you would have to pull the plugs out and crank it over a few times to let the gas blow out of it and change the oil. I don't think it would be a big deal about your jugs leaking gas....if you tried to crank the motor over and THEN it stops turning over, it probably just build-up alot of pressure in the cylinder walls and the excessive gas will have to go somewhere until it finds the weakest seal and then leak out of it. I would pull the head off and then re-install the head for a new seal, but I would let Drew's deal with it first. They have treated me good everytime I go there. Just my $0.02 :)

took the motor back and put on a fuel pump from them , changed oil, fired right up and ran but the next time we tryed it there the gas was pouring out of the bottom again so i left it and they were gonna tear it down again and see what the problem is! so i'll let you know! to answer your questions, i dropped off a complete 1600 motor and had them to make it a 1641 completely rebuilt, turn key ,so yes the carb and heads were allready on the motor , and the fuel pump i used was a mr. gasket from advanced auto but apparently it puts out 7p.s.i. to much! brian suggested using the correct pump instead of a regulator cause if your regulator fails your right back to to much pressure! makes sense to me,anyhow i'll let you know the out come

See he's making it right, even taking the time to tear into it and see if it hurt any parts.

yeh, i went up saturday and picked it up, turns out that the carb apparentley was screwed, because brian drew is the one who fixed it this time and he said he could never get it to stop dumping the gas so he put me on another used carb that he rebuilt and said that he shaved the heads to make sure they were sealing properly and we ran it on the dyno and everything seemed fine, so i should be boltin it up and finising my wiring in the next day or two i,ll post some before and after pics when i get done, this is my first build but i think you guys will like it. thanks for all the input, i'm still learning as i go. bye the way brian drew personally is a cool dude ,but it was not him that did the initial build on the motor it was another brian that works there and i guess he didnt catch the carb issue? but drew took care of it!

well on the dyno machine they ran it with no tach because my coil didnt have a spade terminal to plug onto,so they did it by torque, and ran it up to like 100 p.s.i. torque? a couple of times. i dont know how your supposed to calculate that but maybe some one can fill me in a little! but i did take it out to haspin on sat. and ran it, asside from the choke not opening up all the way when its warmed up (which i can fix), did'nt seem to idle very well, but man when your in it, she flat out shits and gets! so i think i'm going to do some fine tuning of my own and i should bo o.k.. will have some pics soon

Depends on at what RPM it made the 100 lb ft.
It should be lb. ft. Brian's dyno was reading and not PSI.

HP is a calculation of torque and RPM.

Torque x RPM / 5252

If it made the 100lb. ft. at lets say 4800 RPM.
It would be 100 times 4800 divided by 5252 or 91.39 HP

You have to know both the torque and RPM numbers to know what your HP is.

No, that is too high for what you have.

Ask Brian for the numbers.
The formula I gave you is how you determine HP.
Gotta have the maximum torque number and the RPM it was making that number.
