Has anyone used the hydralic steering off a forktruck? I've seen them on moster trucks, rockcrawlers, and some street trucks with rockwells. I was thinking of using the system. Any thoughts?

Anyone using an electronic power steering system? Some newer cars are using them now, no power steering fluid, no hoses to run, just wires!

Obviously wouldn't be for the same application as a hydraulic setup, but could be a middle ground idea?

Don't forget with hydraulic steering, if you engine stalls or won't start you won't be able to steer. That could be a big problem if your motor stalls going down hill. Afterburnt runs power steering. You would have to pm him about what components he uses.

i have power steering on a rack system, when the engine stalls i dont loose my steering. it feels like a rack with a bit of drag. when comming down a real steep hill i shut it down and drag the rear, steering is not power, but its still works

I understand that. I've had many of beater cars with broken power steering. I think I have one now. lol :lol:
I'm talking about Hydraulic steering, like whats on a tow motor. I've never tried it but I don't think that the steering works at all once the motor is off.

I tried turning a forklift with out the motor runing and it turned but was real stiff. Of course it has a 5000 lb counterweight above the wheels. We need input from one of the rock crawlers.

yes they will steer they have a build in pump just like any other power steering a little hard to steer

Back when I wheeled trucks I used to use this site for info alot. You could probably find out eveything you need to know about hydraulic steering there. www.pirate4x4.com

There is a guy named Jeff Mosley has a chaindrive with hydro steering, He likes it last I heard.

I'm going to run something similar to a fork lift steering on my woods buggy. I have been saving up parts and I think i've got it figured out. Instead of a rack, I will be using a cylinder off the side shift on a fork lift.... I'll post it all when I get finished with the a-arm car.

That looks like exactly what I was looking for. I have seen a electric over ride that might work for when engine stalls.
