 Post subject: rebuilding a tranny

over the weekend, i blew out first gear of my 6 rib tranny. I was wondering if anybody had Jim from Jim's custom VW rebuild their tranny? basically what im thinking of doing, is stuffing it full of weddle gears. i already have the weddle super diff. I was talking to a couple of people about blowing up trannys, and they say once you blow up a tranny, the case gets deformed, is this true? does anybody have any good ideas about what i should do? i need some help. i usually tear up one tranny a year, and this is getting old. i want to spend a little money and do it right.

afterburnt i know a guy in east canton that does awesome work for good price. pm me if you are interested and i will get you in contact with him. builds a lot of the motors and trannys for the guys running around at wellsville.

Ya, he was talking about Brian. How is his work? I was going to give him a call this weekend and see what he can do for me. Far as LA Products go, the last time I had them build a tranny, I had to bring it back and have them do it right. One of my friends had them build a tranny three times within one month, and then he finally mail ordered one. Another friend of mine went to buy some gears from them, when Pat brought them to the counter, he looked at them and told her that the gears looked like they came from the bottom of a swamp. I've been going to LA Products for a lot of years, and I found out that you have to know exactly what you want, and take their advice with a grain of salt.

i have built my own trannys for a couple of years, and i think there is alot of truth in the case being warped after you break it once. I have actually replaced my 091 case a couple of times. The last time I broke the tranny (4th gear) i guess I didn't notice (or it was un-noticeable) that main shaft bearing above the pinion bearing mst have had a little slop, but after a season of racing, that bearing was wiped out, and it turn ruined the surface of the mainshaft! Of course it was an $800 weddle main shaft, destroyed by a $5 dollar bearing. :cry: Needless to say, I now send it out to rancho once a year for a race prep (all new seals, bearings, syncs, and they also magnaflux everything) for around $250. I know its not cheap, but I look at it as insurance for a trans thats got around $4000 invested in it. 8)

i did buy a used case from Weddle, it was only 125 dollars, and i bought a whole bunch of weddle gears and parts, i was gonna have Brian put it together for me.

If you would like to have your trany done with all weddle gears and done right the first time the best people i know are a small shop in Ohio called BT Trany. I don't know if they are still there but there number was 740-325-1163.


Maybe John from R us would know there number.

I had Brian from East Canton rebuild my tranny. We used all Weddle gears and a super dif. I even bought a case from Weddle. I took it o ut a few weeks ago, and he did a good job. The tranny worked good, it shifts smooth, it works awesome. I was talking to someone down in Wellsville, and they said that when Brian rebuilds tranny's, he will either hit it right on or miss it. I'll write the number down you gave me. Hopefully I won't need it. Thanks a lot.

The most important thing when rebuilding any trany is to make sure that your center case is good and tight. The main reason that first or any of your primary gears go out is a loose center case. This part of the trany holds the main shaft good and tight so that your gears stay lined up. As far as the case being damaged when you break something, this is not likely unless you break the pinion bearing or a piece of gear gets caught between the case and a moving part. Also you asked if the case can become warped or distorted, The answer is no, Magnesium is a metal that does not bend. It will break or crack before it will distort. If you need help or need any questions answered, BT Offroad is a good place to go. They have been building WV tranys for 20 years. Thats were I have all my work done. I have a 6 rib they did for me 6 years ago and it is still working great and I don't cut it any slack. I am running a 2332 with dual 44s and I run it hard. I have never had a trany last that long.

I have a 5 rib that lasted 5 years that they built. It wasnt there fault I did not lift the throttle in time and broke first gear. I'm haveing it fixed for a spare if my six rib fails.
