i want to run my stock alternator and a alternator from a f-150. how do i get the pulleys to run together? it isnt charging quick enough and i dnt have the money for a big alternator

What are you running that would drain your battery that fast? Even the standard Alternater should handle most Buggy lighting. Are you sure your Batery and or Alternater is good?

i run 3 55 watt lights up front and 2 55 watts out back. and i want to add a radio. the battery is practially new

55 amp bosch alternator is standard for most buggies, that should be more than enough for what you need, you should be able to get them at Autozone and I don't know how much they cost, but it should'nt be very high. I got mine from Phil's bug shack in Grayson, KY and it was a kit, it has the stand, the pulley and the alternator for $180, I ran it for 4 years now and still working good. 55 amps should give you about 650 watts continuous power when running, about 14 volts times 55 amps equals 770 watts peak power.

yeah. but i also want to have a radio and i had one in and it killed all my power. so any ideas? i know ppl have done it i just dnt know how

I suggest you use only one alternater. The problem you will have with two is regulation of the voltage. Two regulaters fighting each other. Not to mention the mechanics of it all. Save your money and cry once, it will be worth it in the long run. Check all your grounds for corrsion and loose connections.

it soonds to me like the alt. you have isn't charging properly -- check your wires on the alt. for coorosion or a break were the connectors attach to the ends -- make sure your belt is tight. By trying to run two alternators i think your gonna end up frying something , plus id say your gonna lose power by turning another pully and extra battery and alt, is extra weight

If you add another battery, it is just more weight than needed, if you do this you will have to isolate the 2 systems for it to work seperatly, I agree with Odyknuck, I would only run one alternator. If you run 2 of them it will have to be same kind of alternators just like the dual systems you see in some diesel pickups. I would'nt want the headache trying to make the 2 of them work, just buy a bigger alternator and bolt it on and you're done for once and for all. If this standard alternator won't run you buggy with this radio and other goodies, you may have a grounding problem, good grounding will require less amperage for the electronics to work. Just my 2 cents, hope you will get it figured out.

we ran two alt's on our comp stereo cars back in the day. but we were pushing 8000watts with 4 big draw amps. i would see no need for this on a buggy, and its quite a pain in the ass to setup. do what others are suggesting and check your wires. also make sure you have at LEAST 8ga wire running from the alt to the battery. if you have a smaller wire it cannot carry the load.

Total wattage divided by voltage = amperage.

Your light load is about 23 amps.
Something else going on if your 55 amp alternator won't keep the battery charged.

Do you have an alternator idiot dash light?
That has to be in the circuit for the alternator to work properly.

You deffinatly have some wiring problems or your alternator isn't working. You should be able to run all your lights, a c.b., your engine, a radio, a speaker amp, charge your phone and your laptop all at the same time on a stock alternator.
With the buggy running and everything else off you should have 13.5 to 14.4 volts at your battery. If not, you have problems. Make shure all your connections are clean, and solid. Also make shure the wire isn't covered in corrosion because electricity runs across the surface of the wire not through it. So if your copper is green or white, even inside the insulation, the wire is junk.

When I build my buggy, I was having some of the same problems. I tried everything; I then changed the battery not once but twice, (red top optima) and have now not had any problems in 9 months.

i sure hope that was just a hilarious sarcastic remark because i sure got a good laugh haha

Yes I will admit I worked at Autozone. I never did figure out where the "Zone" I was suppossed to be in was. It was a second job. I'm not proud of it. LOL So if I'm wrong about your alternator, just blame Autozone.

i forgot, you were in the autozone protection program. sorry, now your gonna have to change your name and relocate again.

i iwll bet that 75% of the time I see people change their batteries in their buggies, the problem was the ground wire. Don't use those crappy terminal lugs (the ones that have the twobolts that "pinch" the wire to the terminal), try to use the solder-on ends, also I ran a ground wire to the transaxle. My race buggy has all kinds of lights and electronic stuff, and it only has a 4-wheeler battery in it. If everything is clean, you don't need all the extra stuff.

An alternative to an optima batt. is one you buy at Napa. It is a dry cell, looks just like an optima, same specs just $40 cheaper. Can't remember the brand name

I'm shure afterburnt will be quick to correct me if I'm wrong. But he runs a optima and I believe he runs a stock alternator. The only thing you are gonna need a "hot" charge for is a very big battery. Like 1500 cranking amp battery.

a "hot charge" isn't good for any battery. Most batteries have a "memory" so a fast charge means a fast discharge, and a slow low, amperage charge means a longer lasting charge. Optimas are no differnt. I work on alot of forklifts, and some have big optima packs in them, so when one battery goes down, I have to replace the whole pack, and then get 3 good ones to go home with me
