Anyone got any tricks on how they found out where thier upper rear shock mount is located or how its located.

shock is to be 90 degrees to the trailing arm at full compression travel. Note : compression travel is limited by CVs travel and ground clearence.

I dont understand what you mean by 90*. Someone got a pic or diagram showing what the shock is actually in 90* with. If 90 with the trailing arm do you mean from the back, side, or what is actually 90*.

As near as possible to a right angle so the shock stays fairly straight as it opens and closes. Mount so that at full compression and extension you are not using all of the shock travel but less and close to all travel. Get the most out of the shocks efforts to control bounce.

Nick we just did this on mine they are 90* at full compression. Take a square go off the top of the arm at full uptravel. Then thats where the shocks should be mounted. I threw something together in paint real quick to show I don't have all my graphics stuff here to make a nice one but hope you get the point. The bottom of the "square" is however far your arm will travel up.

Hows this look. I have the trailing arm at full compression. The first pics are the bottom and the last is the top. What are you guys thoughts on this and am i in the right area.

You got the right idea Nick.

It appears your bottom mount is established at a good place. How much travel do you have? The amount of travel in the shock needs to be considered. Mount the top of the shock in a place where most of but not all of it's travel is used. Same with limiting straps. I like my rear shocks to be mounted so the distance from the spring plate pivot point to the bottom shock mount is similar to the distance from the spring plate pivot point up to the top shock mount. Out equals up. Confused yet,,give me time... Think of it a triangle with equal length sides when the shock is in its mid travel length (close as possible since the bottom shock mount is established). The idea is to keep the primary shock moving at a consistent rate with the wheel. Secondary shocks may be mounted later if you like for progressive reasons. ,,,,,,or something

My buggy has about 16-17inches and my shocks are 18in travel. Some of what you said is confusing but i get the jist of the concept. I think im gonna make my mount along the 90degree line in between the two arcs i made from the earlier discussion. Does anyone have anything against this idea why i should not..I got the axles from www.sandstuff.com there made to go 36 degrees but thats not true they do a little over 32, or else would have 18inches of travel..

another trick is measure from your outter pivot (spring plate) to the lower mount of your shock and then measure from your outter pivot to the center of the bottem of your shock body. these two numbers should be the same if your shock is mounted correctly. i have never mounted one this way but i have gone back and checked and this formula proves to work. now if you think that is hard, try to mount two shocks my new car has a coil-over and a triple bypass in the back, and it took me a week just to figure out how to use the most of both shocks.

Race buggy did your Bottom shock mount spacing match the top shock mount spacing to get the best overall use of twin shocks?

yes, i ended up with the same spacing. the bypass is a 14inch stroke and i am using the whole thing, the coil-over is a 12 inch stroke and im using around 10.5 inches of it. it was easy to mount the bypass correctly (using all the stroke) but the coil-over was a pain in the a$$. they ended up paralel. if i would have angled it forward, i was afraid of loosing spring rate and I didn't like the apperance of it. After talking to a few racecar manufacturers they told me that even they don't use the whole c/o in that same set-up. Next car i build like that i will just get both shocks the same stroke and mount them side by side.

I will have more shock than what i will actually be able to use. I have 18" travel shocks and i cant remember the exact amount of travel on my buggy but its less. So what im gonna do is mount it inbetween somewhere in middle of the travel so i should be good in bump travel and droop travel.
