Anyone have any advise on where I can buy a reliable motor. I am just finishing up my sandrail build and the motor I have runs like crap. The block is leaking oil like crazy, the intake is leaking, the empi carb is completely miss jetted. In runs, but not very well.

Since this will be a Street and Off Road buggy, I am very interested in having a VERY reliable engine. I am currently running an 1835 but interested in your ideas.

Thanks in advance.
Dan

Here is a pic of my build so far. Pretty much finished..

Wow, nice looking buggy. I'd be scared to take that thing in the woods! It looks too nice to take it and beat the crap out of it in the woods!!

Thanks, I will give Tim a call.

Hey Kyjr, don't all buggies start out nice when they are first built. :? :) And then we beat the crap out of them.

Thanks again for the support and I look forward to meeting everyone on the trails.

Hey Nick,

I have thought about going with something different but I have no idea what thhat would cost.

What are the rough costs to convert to a good running Subaru? $2000 - $3000 - $4000

Is there a website I can checkout that sells Subaru motors?

Thanks
Dan

There is several engines to choose from for power. Just look here http://www.kennedyeng.com/ for adapter kits and here http://www.pullapart.com/ for engines. I'm assuming you are mechanically and electrically inclined enough to deal with adapting an engine. Things like wiring, fuel injection, charging systems, and radiator placement require a lot of time and effort. I have seen Honda V6 (ky-bc), Ford V6 (my brother danny), Ford 2.3L (my other brother CrazyD, wildpinto, and fortydegnorth), Saturn, Subaru (to many to list), Pontiac 3.8L V6, and Dodge 2.2L Turbo (me). I'm sure there are others so chime in. Wouldn't it be great to have a page with all the different buggies linked to screen names along with the specs. Its all about power-to-weight ratio and cost. Hope this helps in your quest for new power.

Thanks for all of the information. Based on your feedback and my initial discovery on costs, I think I am going to try to save my VW engine for this season and put in a better engine during the winter.

Thanks agian for all of the information. I will keep looking around and maybe I will find a good deal that I can convert.

I would rebuild the one that's in it. oil leak and miss jetted carb shouldn't be to much trouble. Even if you have to split the case and put new jugs in, thats alot cheaper than a new motor or suby swap in my opinion.

I guess I am going to stay air cooled for a while. I just ordered a MSD distributor, ignition box, coil, weber carbs, plugs and wires. Fuel and spark should be taken care of. Hopefully, I wont blow the block until winter.

Thanks again for all of your support
