I posted this last week but it seems to have disappeared. I just acquired a complete but locked up motor off a guy that came into my shop. the motor number is ah479496. the AH means that it is a 1600 right? I can obviously tell that it is a dual port but the thing i can't figure out is what looks to be a crank position sensor on the back of the motor. It looks to me that it picks up off the flywheel. I am thinking it is some sort of fuel injection sensor? Did they make any such thing? On the block above the sensor it has a number that is really hard to read. it looks like 043c10. any help would be appreciated. I am thinking of making this thing into a stroker motor and just want to know if it is a good platform to start with. thanks

I think AH was a 1973 case. Yes it was a 1600 dual port. Any case that begins with two letters is a good platform to start with. Just make sure you check it really well for cracks or warpage BEFORE you spend the time doing the machine work.
The sensor you are talking about was used by the Dealership when you took your car in for service. The technician would plug his machine into the car and this was part of the system to read RPM's. If you notice on the firewall of the later beetles (72 on) they had a plastic plug with about 20 wires going into it. This was the diagnostic link for the Dealer to hook to.
Hope this helps,

Roy

I dont think its a fuel injected case?Does it have 8 or 10 mm cylinder studs?Check out www.davisracing.com theres a page on engine identification.

the head studs are 8 mm. I don't know what that means but the dealer plug for rpm makes sense to me. you guys are damn geniuses. thanks for the help. Now the fun starts. I can't wait to build this motor to replace the 1835 thats on my buggy now.

AH is a good foundation IF it checks out OK.
Need to look for:

Current align bore size, if it's already .040-.040 or similar, get another case.
Not worth putting a lot of money in a case that is nearly used up.

Check for warpage. Clean the two halves and torque it back together.
Shine a flashlight in one end at the center main bearing saddle.
Look in the other end, if you see light in the parting line, it's toast.

Obviously check for cracks, especially around #3 cylinder in the back.

Check the lifter bores, if a lifter fits loose in the bore, you will have low oil pressure.

The sensor means nothing to a off road engine. cut it off flush and call it good.
