running a msd 6a and msd dizzy.when i turn off the ign. the motor runs 3 to 5 sec. after shut down. this only happens when the motor is warmed up. msd had me put a diode on the wire to the dummy light and tee a ballest resistor in line with the switched power to the msd. still have the same problem.

The only thing I can think of is the diode in the charging light circuit is installed backwards. I feel the problem lies in this area. I can't see where using a resistor to the main power for the MSD box would do anything. Actually I think it would hurt you.
Try pulling your fan belt off and firing the motor up for a second and turn it off. See if it still does it with the belt removed.

try a fuel shut-off solenoid? i know this is fixing the symptom, but a good safety feature to boot.

A fuel shut off solinoid will not help this problem. You still have float bowls full of gas.

Do you have any accesories or lights or anything wired to your alternator? In other words, did you used it as a place to pick up 12 volts for something? If

MSDs logic on the ballast resistence was to take the power to ground when it was turned off. Its in parrellel not in series with the power feed.

i`ve seen that happen when the fan on the oil cooler was hooked to the coil so it wood run whenever the key was on.

Like Gusto said. But I can tell you from personal experience, I had everything on one wire ign,fuel and fan for the oil cooler. And when I shut the power off the fan would act like a generator and powered the ign for a few seconds. My solution was, I put everything one it's own power lines. But if you have a fan and put the diode on the fan power line that should solve the problem. Good luck!

install a diode between alt light an voltage reg that will take care of it. been there done that. 15 or 20 cents at r.shack

found out what the problem was, thanks to odyknuck who found a post on the samba. turns out i installed a new oil cooler with a fan, when the fan shuts down it back feeds a charge which appearently is enough to keep the ign. running for a few seconds. what made this a little more confusing is that i installed a thermostatic switch inline so the only time the problem appeared was when the oil temp got to 165deg. and kicked the fan on. simple fix, just had to install a diode on the power supply to the fan to keep it from back feeding. im really suprised that when i called msd tech support they never brought this up. sorta reminds me of going to the auto parts store, nobody thinks oudside the box.

where did you get the Diod? and what kind brand etc? Thanks

My new MSD box for my wife's buggy came with one, but I got one at Radio Shack for my old MSD box that I put on my buggy. Just asked them for a one way diode and the guy took me right to it.
