I just thought I would post a pic of the very light steel flywheel I asked Dave to put on my motor. What do you think?

It just looks small.... compared to the boys. Brett however has a huge one. Which comes in handy since he sits at the bottom of the hill playing with it.

Whats the weight on that thing 6 to 8 pounds maybe. Looks cool to bad you won't get to see it when its working. lol

I would be afraid of that thing flying into pieces.I bet it would warp pretty easily after a little clutch slipping.It does look cool though and it can't weigh more than 6 pounds or so.

Light is the only way to go, but that one looks bad. But it might just be the S$$$.

The guy we bought it from races offroad. He has used it for 3 years with no problem. This is the first one they have sold.

That would be the ultimate for reducing rotating weight and would work well for racing. For a woodsbuggy I don't think it would work very well. There is not enough metal there to disapate the heat generated from the clutch. I think you will find it has a short life span for woods riding.
Don't get me wrong, it WILL work great but I don't think you will get more than a year out of it.

The flywheel got me thinking about what else I could do to let the motor rev faster. So I started drilling my rotors. they went from 18# to about 12#

Im thinking a flywheel that light would be great for High RPM racing. For the Woods I would think a heavy one would be better when your lugging thru the woods to keep momentum up with out having to slip the clutch a lot.

Careful on lightening those rotors to much more. We tried it and they have broken on us. Drilling them is OK to do but much more and they cracked on us.

That is how we do them Dean with NO problems. We also turn them down alot also. Less weight= less you have to push up a hill!!

That flywheel looks too heavy for me! LOL

Yes I am a trail rider however even on hills you can still lose momentum. In any event then Climb, Climb , Climb it is! lol

I guess I thought the advantage would be that it would allow me to let out of the gas and then get back into it easier. Normally if you lose momentum on a hill you are about done.

Im thinking that the heavy flywheel inertia keeps the motor from slowing down as fast when you do have to get back into it. Kinda like the tractor effect.

I guess you are talking about the huge flywheel on the side of the old tractors? Or maybe the wheel on the side of an old haybaler. Those where used to hold momentum. If you have a very low powered engine or a pto to get the wheel moving then the weight of that wheel kept things moving. But it took almost all the power those old things had to get it moving. That wheel did not make power it only kept it going. You certianly could not quickly stop one of those things then quickly get it going again. They took alot to stop and alot to get going. That is not what you want when hillclimbing. I would venture to say that if you where racing you would want to have the ability to quickly get in and out of your engine. But if you want to bale hay....

I did that too. My valves now wiegh 1 gram less. At the very least it will be less weight for the cam to move.

It still applies here except at a much smaller scale and even a 1600 VW has no proiblem spinning a stock weight Flywheel. So it does not require that much power in this application. In Racing I would want a lighter flywheel because your in the throttle hard most of the time. On a hill you tend to feness the throtle in places to keep the front end down or to top a ledge etc. Food for thought. You allready know how your current flywheel works so put that one in and test it. If you dont like it, its an afternoon of work to put your other one back in. Let us know how it worked for you.

I use the sand buggy hubs and rotors. they are 6 pounds.
