I don't have a diagram, but I may be able to help. The regulator is usually marked what terminals go to the generator. There should be a DF term. on the reg. that will need to be wired to the DF term. on the generator. Also the D+ term of the reg. needs to be wired to the D+ on the generator. There also is a D- term. that is actually the ground at the base of the regulator mount. This should be wired to the ground screw on the housing of the generator thats twords the fanshroud. Most people don't hook up the D- to ground wire, but the other D+, and DF will have to be hooked up. On the other side of the regulator there should be two wide terminals stacked on top of each other marked B+. One of the wide terminals needs to be wired to the + on your battery for charging, and the other wide one will be wired to power your ignition switch. By the two large terminals there will be a small single terminal. This small terminal is for your charging/warning light. I'll see if I can find some diagrams, or pictures, but I hope this helps.

If you don't have the wire labeled "ignition" on a buggy, then how do you get power to your charging light, and coil, to start your engine?

thanks gkeeton. thats exactly what i needed. I couldn't figure out what the terminal going to the charge light was for. someone was telling me it needed 12 volts to excite the regulator but that didn't make sense to me. Thanks again guys.

It does, the light is wired into the excite circuit so that when your are running the engine and the light comes on, you've either thrown the belt or the alt. quit charging.

Hey mjb600, no problem! I too was just learning about VW stuff not too long ago. Like turboblue posted, the Alternator does require a charging light to initially get the Alternator charging, but I don't think you have to have it to get a Generator to start charging. I would definitely put a charging light on your buggy though. If for some reason your belt comes off, your charging light will come on to tell you your Generator/Alternator isn't spinning to charge the battery. If it isn't spinning, neither is your cooling fan. If your engine is allready up to temp, it only takes a few minutes to overheat, and cause major damage if your belt comes off without knowing.
