This is my firsyt post, but I discovered this site while I was in Iraq, and just recently got registered on it. I enjoy looking at the pictures and the videos.. I have been into off roading for awhile and had my own assortment of atv's and 4x4 trucks (still working on my mud truck  ) ..
Anywho, my name is Josh and I live in Sonora KY. I just purchased (traded for) a rail buggy, and got a jc whitney catalog ordered as soon as i got it. I am working on getting pictures of it, but the poor thing needs LOTS of work. I don't even know how to tell what size motor is on it?! it is the style with cv axel shafts, and not the solid tubes running from the tranny to the axel, and it has a weird looking coilover set up on the back end... I would guess that this is good, but I have no idea about these things. anyway, the story from the original owner was that he bought it from the shop wich rebuilt the motor, but never had a fuel tank on it, so never started it. he has a couple other buggies to play with so never bothered with this one and just pushed it in the barn... 5 years later I aquire it, and the motor is locked up solid. I have tried to remove the motor, but can seem to get it apart from the transmission, whats the trick? I will get my pictures up asap so that I can get more information on it, and hopefuully have it going by spring time. Thanks in advance.
Josh

Welcome to the site. Thanks for your service in Iraq. My son is there now.
You will get plenty of help here. You have an IRS rear suspension and that is good. Keep posting.

If your running a VW motor than there should be 2 bolts on top of the bellhousing that connected to the engine, and there should be 2 nuts on bottom that are on the studs sticking through the bellhousing from the engine, get those 4 out and it should come off. Welcome to the site!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have removed the 4 nuts/bolts that looked like they held the engine and transmission together, but they still won't come apart. I figured maybe it was rust or something on the jack shaft holding it, but I can't figure out how to lossen it up, if this is the case. the engine is locked up, or froze rather, and I was told to put oil in the cylinder holes and start working the motor over and it will free up... any experience with this?
Sorry for not clarifying but yes it is a VW motor, how can I find out the displacement of my engine?
Thanks
Josh

Sea Foam DeepCreep you can get it at autozone

spray it in each cylinder and let sit for about 15 minutes. then work it over. i freed up a few 4.3s that way hah

Just pull the spark plugs out and put some used oil down in the cylinders, let it soak for a few days, then try turning the crank nut at the flywheel, eventually it should free up, once it frees up it will likely only go about an inch or so, but keep working it back and forth, it will free up.

hope this helps. Donnie

Welcome home, mudfreak!! Thank you for risking it all in Iraq so we can do stuff like ....work on buggies!
No question is a dumb question when it comes to buggies.
Any question you got about a buggy, somebody here can answer it!

And throw away that JCShitney book! Get you a CBPerformance catalog (or check it out online) and a Bugpack catalog, and the "How to Build Dunebuggies" book. (Not sure if thats the actual name, help me out here somebody!)

Try Tim @ Southern-buggies (1-606-864-2217) in London, KY for parts and advice. Very knowledgable on woodsbuggies and he can usually match or beat the catalog prices. And he's the closest shop to the best riding in KY!

I remember going to JC Shitney when I was a kid and visiting relatives in Ill. Never bought anything from them but my sted dad did. I remember looking through that catalog of theirs thinking it was old stuff for sale.

Keep asking questions that is the best way to learn.

I don't believe I will be busting any holes in my transaxel housing.. since it's the only on that I have. I am still working on getting the motor off though.. and eventually I will get it to turn over (the enginge not the buggy) but I need alot of little stuff, like cables, fuel tank, lines, and such... catalog my best bet?

Hey mudfreak

First of all, Thanks for your service! We're glad to have you home.

Sorry to hear you're having problems from the get-go. You're just up the road a little from me. I might could give you a hand sometime if you need it. Right now, it mostly depends if you're working on your buggy in a heated shop or out in the cold. lol.
Seriously though, I'd be glad to help you out if you need it. I'm not a mechanic or even very smart to be honest, but I can usually get by. I also have a small stash of spare parts like fuel tank, cables, etc...
Pour some oil, seafoam, wd-40 or whatever you got in those cylinders and let 'er soak. You can give me a call or otherwise let me know. 270.779.0262

Later -Steve
