VW based engines were the schnitz in the late 70's and most of the '80's.
Had a really good torque curve for the smaller tracks but were replaced by the iron duke Pontiac and now the Ed Pinks/Gaertes and the Esslingers.
That Autocraft engine would probably cost in the neighborhood of $6-8K back

I know that up till a couple of years ago they raced those at Toledo Speedway and a couple tracks in Mich. Auto Craft in Toledo built the motors but they have gone out of business recently. They had 2700 cc engines. I assume they still run them.

Denny McNutt ran Autocraft in Toledo.
He sold out to Mike Seymore in Marlboro Mass several years ago.
Mike still runs it today and his site is what I linked to in my other post.
There is a short track on the SE
