I just got my first buggy so I am fairly new to the whole vw engine thing. I have a 1600 single port? Nothing fancy, but the engine seems to hesitate just alittle when I give it gas. If I let off the accelerator and ease into it, the buggy seems to do alright. I have replaced the fuel pump which helped out some but it still hesitates when I give it some power and especially on hills... not so much on flat ground. Once I get it going it runs pretty good. It just bogs down when u shift gears especially on inclines. Does anyone know what else I could check or try to find out what is wrong with it :?:
Any information is greatly appreciated! Thanks!:D

Seeing as how everything I have changed out so far appears to be the original stock part from the 70's I would be willing to bet it has the original stock carb on it as well. Im really not to sure I have not had the buggy very long as Im still learning about it. Any suggestions as to what would be a good carb for it? It does not have to be the most expensive just something that wont bogg and is dependable in the woods if that is in fact the problem.

Sounds like a Solex34 Pic 3. I had the same problem when I first started my buggy 6 years ago. Now I have a 1915 with dual 40's. Larryjr. It won't be long and you will learn more than you ever thought you could. Don't know how old you are but save your money and put it into the motor and carbs then the trany and you will have something great. Take your time and read the postings here. There are so many on here that know what they are talking about with these motors and everything to go with one.

If you have a stock VW carb, check the accelerator pump jet. Take your air cleaner off, and push the choke flap open so you can see down in the carb. Shine a flashlight down in the carb, and look for a little brass colored thing that looks like a faucet. Move your throttle arm as if you were pumping the pedal, and see if the little faucet shaped thing is squirting. It should have a nice strong, straight stream that shoots down in the carb. If it's squirting good, make sure it is adjusted so that it squirts straight down in between the back of the carb and the butterfly plate shaft. You want to have it so that it squirts past the butterfly when you move the throttle arm open. Do you have an aftermarket exhaust, like a Tri-Mill Style? I have enlarged the idle jet a tiny bit to give the carb more gas when using a bigger exhaust. While the engine is running, cup your hand over the top of the carb. You are doing this only to reduce the air going into the carb, so leave your fingers slightly open so you don't choke off all of the air. Rev up the engine while reducing the air with your hand. If you engine revs up better without hesitation, you may need to open up your idle jet a little. It may be other things, but this is what I would check first.
