everybody I`ve talked to says put them in dont know if it makes a difference or not except you get rid of the brass gear on the crank which could be a plus for those top secret motors they have in KY.

PIPEDOPE I always use strait cuts in my big motors what it does is take the pressure off the oil pump a strait cut gear won't cause the gear to want to push off the other gear it can't but it want's to so it reduces side load

You still use the brass gear it runs the dist drive.

Yeah brass gear runs the dist. drive like Mudd Mutt said.
Can't get rid of that.

Only reason to run the SC gears is if you run a fairly aggressive cam and pretty stout valve springs.
The helical stock gears will "push" against the cam thrust bearing when trying to open valves with a lot of seat pressure.

You are right at the point you can go either way.
I would since you may want to reinstall one set of springs or even change heads down the road.
Buy either Bugpack, Magnums or CBs version.

Don't buy any that cost $50 or so that one sees on the 'net.

I agree with Gary 100%. Watch what you buy. Don't try to save a few dollars on a gear set. The cheap sets will fail.
Your valve spring question, depends on what RPM you motor is limited to and what pushrods you have.

I agree that there are some inexpensive sets that are poorly made that you need to watch out for, and to stick with a well known brand. I haven't heard any bad things about the gearsets from Bugpack, Magnum, and EMPI. Turboblue, why don't you like the EMPI sets? If your categorizing them in the less than $50 group, than you're getting them for a smokin deal! The Racer Price in EMPI's new catalog is $119.90 for them. So you're saying the gearsets you don't like have the large cam gear made from cast steel, intead of billet? Isn't cast steel stronger than the cast aluminum stock VW gear it's replacing?

Dry sump with stock gears is a big NO NO also. The smaller pumps like CB pumps will work but will wear out the gears over time. If you ever want to go with a dry sump always use straight cut gears. I run the bug pack dry sump pumps and bug pack cam gears.
