ok my buddy is interrested in having built the baddest vw motor you can get. somewhere around 2789 or 2920. who are you ky boys having build your motors for ya? any names or numbers post em up thanks

What is this engine being used for, and how much is your buddy planning on spending? Both 2789, and 2920 engines use a 101.6 cylinder with a crank stoke of 86mm+. To use a 101.6 cylinder you need to have an aftermarket case like from Scat, or Autocraft. You will also need either Scat's / Autocraft's heads, or have head like an Angle Flow / Competition Eliminator modified to accept the 101.6 bore. The 101.6 cylinders are kind of a "race only" cylinder, and have very little cooling fins. The performace heads in this area also are not set up very well for cooling. There are a few inexpensive 86mm stroke cranks, but once you get past an 86mm crank prices jump to about $800-$1500 a crank. If your buddy is building this for a dirt dragster, it will work, but you won't be able to keep it cool enough for a trail riding buggy. You could get an engine based off of a Type 2, 2 liter from a 70's bus. They can use pistons up to 105mm, and strokes up to 86mm. 84 X 105 would give you around 2909, and 86 X 105 would give you around 2977. I know of at least one person with a 2909 running it in his street Beetle. The only draw back with these engines is that you are limited to the performance because of the realativly small ports of the 2 liter VW head. Reguardless, your buddy will probably spend in excess of $8000 for the engine, and in excess of $2500 on his 6 Rib to keep it together. I would get one of the Aluminum "bubble top" cases, and build a 2332/2387. You could get either an 86 stroke Bugpack, or 84 stroke Empi/Bugpack crank, and just use 94mm cylinders. Get a set of at least 42 X 37 valved heavily ported heads, and run dual 48 IDF/IDA carbs, fuel injection, or turbo. This is about the top of the food chain for an "inexpensive" large engine. Once you get past this barrier, prices for parts start doubling, and tripling. If your buddy still wants the 2700+ cc engine, Jim's Custom VW's in Columbiana OH is capable of building it for him. Jim built a Scat Cased 2442 Turbo Engine for a persons dirt dragster a few years back. The person lost interest, and just the shortblock ended up getting sold for $2850.

a guy i got my four seater off of, his brother had a buggy that had a motor like that in his buggy they said they cloudnt keep it from overheating in the winter he sold it a few years back though

You all knew somebody would say it, so I will. Why don't he build a WC so he won't have any overheating problems and his horsepower will only be limited by how much he wants to spend? Tom

I was kind of wondering about that, but his original question was about the "baddest VW motor you can get". Cooling problems would only be associated with the large "racing" parts. If you wanted to, you could build a 2332/2387/2442/2500cc engine. With 94mm cylinders, and an "044" VW style casting cylinder head, you would be able to keep it cool. I'm a die hard VW engine guy, but a few of the buggy guys I know are looking into running Subaru engines. A turnkey 200-300HP VW engine is still going to run you $5000-$8000. What does a Kennedy adapter, and a junkyard 200+HP Subie Engine cost?

if your talking to me its b.c i have 2 buggy's ones a 2 seater and its w.c and the other is a 1 seater a.c the one seater i was just giving my dads friend bought it and didn't want to finish it so its mine now and i thought it wold be nice to have both to be able to compare

yea wc is cool but out of the question. he was maybe looking at 2498 etc now i told him all the info today.

theres alot more to it than motor + plate+ wires its the 500 bucks worth of bolts wires hoses pumps ect.
