X2 on the CB mini wedge ports...42X37.5 valves allow good flow, and the smaller ports will increase the air velocity at lower rpms. Also, alot of people might disagree..but I'm a big fan of 5.4 rods with an 84mm stroke in woods / lower rpm engines. The increased piston speed really helps out low end torque and makes for great response on the bottom end. I also like the newer FK series cams...they are fast ramp grinds with alot of lift and make good torque; a FK-42 or FK-43 with 1.4 rockers would work great for what you want to do. It would be good insurance to sleeve the lifter bores...if your not familiar with that or don't know where to get it done, contact Vic at Keiths VW 304-548-7627
Good luck on your build.

I'm planning on using cb5.6 rods. I think the faster lift would be harder on the lifters ? Do you guys have any opinions on what brand of pistons/jugs are good.

As far as pistons, Weisco, Ross, and Mahle are all good. Other brands are cheaper. You get what you pay for.
Good Luck

I would go no longer than 5.5 on the rods. Mahle pistons are basicly unobtainable now so your gonna have to spend some money. As for the cams with fast ramps, they will make good power but are certainly harder on the whole valve train and they are noisier.

It weights 1100 and as of now 29 tall tires or 31 bar tires and a 3 rib tranny. As for the carb I'm up in the air right now thinking of running a holley 500 2bl

I have seen good and a lot of bad mofoco heads.just like everything.me personally I wouldn't buy them, last two sets I've seen the valve guides was junk from brand new and had a real hard time getting any thing replaced but I've got an old set that is fine and has the shit ran out of them, and several guys I know that bought them at the same time I did are still running them, but that was many many years ago and most of there problems are on the new stuff.seems like everything now a days is getting less quality materials cheaper made and more expensive.kinda like empi on some stuff and they have just about lost all of sells due to bad quality management.you got good and bad in everything IMO.but the heads are the to me one of the most important part of the motor, sure it's a total package you have to build it with marrying a lot of factors on mind but buy quality heads and build up to them.street eliminators are excellent heads.I also really like the super flow heads.if your just puttin around and not really needing the power then spend the money on other things, but if your building for power buy the better heads, you get what you pay for.Chad

hey chad how long ago was it that you tried some of the newer mofoco heads, ive been searching on the samba and it seems that they have somewhat went through a "bad spell" a while back but have worked through that and are back to quality as good or better than the "old" days with everything being cast and made here in the USA

the reason i ask is i had a guy trying to sell me some a few weeks ago but kinda leery of them so i started doing a little searching on them and after hearing they are back up to par on quality and made fully in the USA i was thinking about giving them a chance, if not i will just stick with cb performance for heads

This is same problem I had been seeing.this was about two,two and half years ago.all the 050's was bad and that was like 5/6 sets.out of 4 sets of 42's only 1 set is still running so that's bad odds.said they was trying to retool everything and was going to recast them but I havent researched them lately.I understand that sometimes things happen and there is good and bad with everything at times, but felt like they just willingly unloaded their crap onto the customers and then just replaced what they absolutely had to.most of us work to hard to afford this hobby and then deal with crap like that just ain't right.now had they tried harder to make things right to fix a problem that they KNOWED about I'd not be afraid to try them.not saying that they have not fixed the problem and you won't get a good set and at a good price but I'm gonna let other people try them out for awhile first.if you do get them post up your experience with them.and like I said earlier I do have a set on a motor and they have been damn good heads especially for the price back when I bought them 20 years ago.Chad

I would run no bigger than 1 1/2. I know a lot of people think bigger is better but with the smaller header you'll make more low end torque at a lower rpm and still won't really lose that much off the top end.jmo. Chad

Thats a good thread THANKS What do you guys think of straight cut cam gears??? I really want to stay with stock gears but I can't find any steel gears all I find are aluminum gears but I really don't want to run aluminum gear on a steel gear
