I have an 009 Distributor and a degreed pulley but everytime I try to set the timing I can't get it very precise. When I rev it up to 3500 rpm the degress will fluctuate 3-5 degrees the whole time. It will not steadily stay anywhere so I basically am taking a guess. Is this normal or what would cause this? Also, does 28-30 degrees sound about right?

could be a just a bad distributor or worn drive gear on the crank ( they are just made of brass) thats causing the timing to jump around like that, i usually set mine at 32* at 3000 rpm

I think its the carb fluctuating. Sometimes a cylinder missing. Set it staticly with test light if it is a reg. distributor with points or electronic. I don't think you can with an MSD because you dont get power til you rotate motor.

Thank you for the replies. I'll try adjusting the carbs again and setting statically. If that fails to fix it I guess I'll look into another drive gear.

does it have points or electronic ign. if so what brand?

also pull the dist. cap and make sure the mech. advance is free moving and not rusted and trying hang

is it running fine other than the timing jumping around a bit?

is the cap and rotor in good shape?

Petronix. It runs fine just hard to set timing. New cap and rotor.

i would probably try another distributor, im thinking its probably in dist itself, or just be a little conservative on the timing and run it as is

I removed dual carbs yesterdy. The timing would wonder all over the place.I Soaked them and blew them out with air, the floats appeared normal.No luck. The popping went away at least.Then, I put a clean single on there from another buggy with same size motor, waited 'til the motor was warm and I lowered the idle down low but not choking low and the timing is dead on 8.It has an MSD ignition with box.It runs incredibly good.Low end grunt and smooth and instant acceleration and crisp top end.I just want to super glue all adjustments permanatly. One extra thing I did ,I put rtv around the mixture gets to ensure the don't suck air or back out.Dave out.
