New or old heads, could be a valve guide going bad or being bad. I had a motor do that a while back and it ended up being wore out valve guides.

Steel pushrods or aluminum? What are you setting the valves to and how much side clearance do the rockers have?

CR. is between 11to1 and 10.5 to one i run 110 fuel so dont think its fuel knock, I am running chromoly push rods, heads are fairly new, timing is 12 degrees advanced, I will check side play on rockers, and i will also check valve guides.

Thanks for the info guys if you all think of anything else i would be gratefull.

i heard of enignes with the deck so close that after it gets hot that it barely slaps the head. and when does yours start ? thats why i asked about deck. and if deck is close did you check both sides of engine? i had a blocked decked one time and one side was decked .040 more than other.

Running a copper gasket beween the head and barrel? If you run close to zero deck height, they can lightly contact the piston top if you get a warped one, and its possible to never feel/hear it when you turn motor over by hand.

thats good help, because the tap is on the driver side, and it seems to start more when hot, until motor warms up its quite, and the cooper gaskets are .040, im thinking that i have around .010 on my deck height, sounds like i may need to get a new set of cooper gaskets and just change the one side cant hurt anything.

Thanks for the info now i have a direction to start looking

Pull the rocker arms off and check if the shims under the arms have turned any and check the pushrods closely, like hyde and Aaron said, before you pull the head completely off.

What are setting the valves at? When running steel pushrods you should adjust them to a loose zero where you can barely turn the pushrod. If you have .050" total deck i highly doubt you have a piston hitting the head, unless you have a rod bearing gone.

What type of rockers do you have... The Auto-Craft style or stock style?
