well took the buggy out this weekend on camping trip and done good all day but sometime before dark I got a little rough on it and came down a big drop off and the passenger side popped pretty loud, now torsion on pass side is completely collapsed and has no tension on trailing arm. I haven't even took it apart yet but the way it sounded I'm guessing the bar itself broke or splines are stripped. I'm wanting to get some insight on options, meaning keep/repair the torsion, coil over, or air bag? Been reading and researching for hour or so and more I read about air bags the more I'm liking them. Using an airbag do you eliminate the torsion all together and run an air shock? any and all help is greatly appreciated!

yes you eliminate the torsion when you go air bags or coilover. appletree sells an eliminator kit for the torsions. OR YOU CAN CHECK WITH MAD MIKE. HE MADE MINE AND THEY ARE KILLER!

actually you do not have to eliminate the torsion but in your case you might as well. I had torsion and air bags at one time but the torsion was relaxed on both sides. If you have a broke torsion you can replace it and then just slide them in strait with little or no pre-set ,,,,or eliminate altogether.

Usually you'll only snap one if you've got a bar that's too thin and wound the pre-load up too far to get your ride height - you soon go past the fatigue limits.

If it's the bar itself that has snapped it would probably be worth going up slightly in size and using less preload for your ride height.

I would find out whats broke first. If your looking to spend some dough, go any direction. The cheapest would be replace the torsion bar if it were broke, next could be stripted splines in the torsion or spring plate. If its the spring plate replace it. If its the torsion tube, you could always weld in a torsion adjuster or go the airbag or coilover route.

I would agree.. You really need to know what broke before you start looking for options.. It is easy to replace a broken bar or spring plate.

However, it you are looking for a reason to upgrade.. Now seems like a good time..

took it apart today and torsion bar broke... Broke near the middle of the torsion housing just right before the splines. Only a very small piece of the bar is left in there and we couldn't get the remaining part of the torsion bar out... I was thinking can you take the other torsion bar out and drive the other one out? Gonna try to get it out and replace bar before going hog wild and putting together and airbag or coilover setup

Yep.. you have the right idea. You will need to pull the other side and drive it out..

Get a piece of pipe that just. Fits over the busted torsion bar. Then just. Slide it over what's left in the torsion housing beat it onto it then just pull the remaining piece right out. Make sure when u put new bar in u put some grease on splines so it comes out easy next time

I'll try that whenever I work on it again. Glad that Its a pretty easy fix, didn't really wanna spend all that money going to coilovers or airbags. I'm going to have a motor built here within next few weeks and need money for that!

Well hated Passat here. You knew I had something to say. I run torsion and air bags on what I got but if you have a traditional buggy and your inner spline housing is ok and you just broke a torsion bar, then by all means put a type 3 torsion bar in it . It rides like a cadillac!You have to twist a beetle bar like a blue diamond to get some height. 2 outer clicks on a type 3 and it will give lift and an excellent ride.I know I can't sell ice water in hell,but I'll shut up and you piss your money away.I've been buggy riding since 1971...I think beetle bars are 22.0mm and type 3 is 23.5. You can not tell it with the naked eye so put some underwear around your head.

i agree with you dd you wont have a smoother ride in a buggy those bars make it ride great soft but stays up where you set it
