I have been having lots of discussions with ECORS (East Coast Off Road Racing Series) about creating a 2 wheel Drive Buggy class. Before they open up a new class, they would like to see if there is enough interest from the Buggy Community.

General Overview..
The races are all a little different but the general idea is a 2-3 hour race through a multi-mile loop with hills, obstacles and I am sure a few mud holes. You can register your pit crew. Consisting of a few drivers and you can even have a co-pilot ride with you.

They are thinking about a $150 entry fee. That should generate some big payouts.

What are you thoughts and who would be interested in Racing.

MAORA charges $65 per race and a once a year $55 membership fee

That is why we are having the discussions.. I would agree that $150 is a bit more than we normally spend. However, I believe this will include the park admission fee for 3 people and camping. In a lot of parks, a team of 3 people admission fee would be around $30 - $50 plus the entry fee of $25. Total cost is closer to $50 - $75. We can work with ECORS on the cost.

What about the idea of an endurance race? If the cost was reasonable, who thinks it would be fun to race an endurance race?

Cost me alot more in gas then the fee. Depending on time and date sounds like fun.

I think it sounds like a blast.
About $100 too rich on the entry fee though.

Depending on the park what do we spend with 2 or 3 people to go to a hill climb and camp? $50 to $100 maybe more. And thats for 30 to 60 seconds of comp time? Dollar for race time its not even close, lol even if you break. One lap and you've justified it. Just some food for thought, lot more ride time instead of just watching 95% of the time you are at the comp.

Check out Line Mountain. It's brutal, and cheaper.

I love enduro racing! Our race (MAORA) are usually 3 hours or 30 laps depending on track size, and that is about 2-1/2 hours more than a buggy or driver want! I guess thats what mkes it so much fun

In all honesty we have slowed down quite a bit in the last 2 years. Too hard on the equipment.

You want to get me involved, make it 20 laps on a short track, 1/2 mile or so with some of everything. Up hills, down hills, some flat track and trails. I don't need a multi-mile multi-hour race to prove a point.

That would be a short course race, an endurance race really seperates the man from the boys

It sounds like their is limited interest in an endurance race. I believe they are looking for a fairly large group of buggies. Something around 15 or 20 buggies. They already have 3 4x4 classes and a SxS class.

I will let him know that we do not have enough interest at this point. Maybe next year..

The intrest is there more then the funds are in my opinion. Most of us ride for fun more then money. Get the fees down and you will get more willing to compete. We are not the high budget guys that 4x4 racers are, part of why we are in buggies to begin with.

FYI , the ECORS race to be held @ Windrock on Nov. 5th will have multiple classes for Buggies. It is posted on their web site, www.ecors.com. Some of the ECORS people will be here this weekend to lay the course out & it should be a huge event. So make your plans to be here, just as a spectator or as a competitor.Check out the rules & payouts & watch some of their videos.Quiet interesting!!!!

Now that the dust has settled on this subject , let's talk a little more serious and a little more budget minded .

I was involved with off road racing here in eastern Ohio and western Pa from 1974 until 1999 . Some of you might know me but the younger set I doubt. I was the founder of NORRA and a past member of the now defunct OutSiders . The Outsiders was affiliated with the West Penn. Buggy Assoc. out of the Pittsburg , Pa area .

Being out of the sport for the past 12 years puts me at a disadvantage parts and tech wise . However , if a wheel to wheel racing program was available on a local bassis , I'd be up for the challenge once again .

I'm 61 years old but the blood is still there . Here is what I'd like to see .

An off Road racing sanction affering 2 buggy classes and 1 truck / sedan class , all based on stock and spech parts and maybe an engine gear box claimer rule to enforce stock parts .

A stock buggy class would be needed using 2 seat chassis' , stock VW engine with 87's max and no head work , stock bug transaxle either swing arm or IRS . steel wheels , non adjustable single shocks and stock VW suspenssion either BJ or KP .

A Modified class with any 4 cylinder gasoline engine , any gearbox . All other rules would be open .

A Truck and Sedan Class with Stock engine /earbox 6 or 8 cylinder full size American trucks and Mid sized American sedans .

Of course more detail would be needed to tidy up the rules but I think you have the idea . Stock , Back to basics and a good racing program for the spectator . It wouldn't break the ban and you might be suprised at the acceptance .

I'd like to hear any input

Gonzo
