i don't wanna spend hundreds on a high torque one so whats else is out their that is a good starter to use or should i just stick with the normal beetle starter

jesse im not sure but i think a 82 or 83 diesel rabbit starter will work if you do a little mods to the bolt up patern call de de he knows for sure

Hi Firebug, I to have been looking for a stronger starter.
This one works with the 3 & 5 rib bell housings but not with the 6 rib, correct?

Just asking, it seems like the starter gear would have to engage at different depth for a 6 rib.

you are rite! the 6 rib bell is different, its deeper. 1/4 inch i believe is the number, but a bell is very simple to swap out :wink:

I've been told to use a 6volt on a 12 volt system is like having a high torque starter. Not tried it yet but I've heard from lots of folks that it works like a charm.

that works fine for a 1600

Thanks for the info. I need the one for a 5 rib.
So I'll give that one from ebay a try. :)

This is what I use on my 2387.. cranks it REAL fast and no problems. It only works on a "regular" bell housing..not an 091 (unless the bell housing has been surfaced). To use these starters, the armature shaft needs to be turned down to the 12v size and you also need a 12v starter drive (drive the bushing out of it and it will fit perfectly on the 6v shaft.) Also I like to use the 12v solenoid. The key to these starters is to MAKE SURE you have a tight bushing in the bell housing and change it often..
