I posted this on the Samba originally but thought maybe you guys might want to take a stab at it.

OK I'm confused about my spring plate setup on my new IRS rear end. The bolt holes don't seem to match up to the holes in the torsion arms. I can get three in the passenger side but only two in the driver side. I've switched these from side to side several times and wasn't happy with either. I also couldn't finger out which side of the springplate the arm goes but looking at the rust on the spring plate I'd guess the outside.

This is some basic stuff I know but I need some explanations as to why bolt hole locations aren't matching up. For the life of me I can't remember how it came apart.

That is a common problem, it seems to come from where the parts were made. If all the parts were made in Germany everything lines up no problem. But it seems if the some parts were made in Germany and some were made in Mexico they don't work out to well. I have built dozens of torsion eliminators, some had to drill the arms to make them work others didn't.
Just drill out the arms after you check the toe and be done with it.

That's the only thing I can think of that makes any sense. You would figure they are working off the same blueprint but the Mexicants seem to F-up everything, look at what they are doing to the US now.

Just wondering, are you using stock trailing arms? If not, I have seem many people actually mount the trailing arms upside down..

Another thing to verify is that your spring plates are pushed all the way into the torsion housing.

It is easy enough to drill a hole so the plate holes will line-up with the trailing arm holes. But you need to make sure the two align and you are not bending your spring plate to meet the trailing arm. If the spring plate is bending, something else is wrong.
