Where ya from Manther?

Just noticed you asked this question. I'm in Dallas/Fort Worth Area.

Its actually a shitty buggy area to live in. No sand, no woods, hill climbs are pedestrian at best.

The best trail riding in north Texas is around the red river. But all that land is private. There are some dirtbike ranches but they won't let the big buggies in. There are a couple of orv parks but they are weak.

This is why he said they use 2-1/2 x 2-1/2's instead of 2x3's.

Instead of 2 inches wider and 3 inches longer we make it 2 1/2 x2 1/2 so the stock bus drive axles fit and the hub is forward 1/2" compared to a 3x3. That gives just a little bit better cv angle. We consider 3 inches back the most you should run with the tranny in the stock location and using type 2 cv joints only going 2 1/2 inches back is better...

Cool. I've just about decided to get the appletree kit. I spent some time talking to a guy named Jay over there. The arms in the apple tree kit are made right there in house, and they do not have 0% camber. They put a camber on them that they feel is a good medium degree to work for most applications. He said they have gotten a ton of feedback and built out a few cars themselves with the kits etc... I'm thinking of getting the 930 kit because I want to notch my spring plates. Do you guys think i have to do 930's if I do that?

The avery kit was going to be really nice, but I just can't afford it. Also me and my 1641 trail buggy just don't go as crazy as I think some of you guys do.

jay is who i dealt with also, great guy. now everyone has advice to give , im not gonna give you advice this time, just the facts! ihad a 1641 now a 1776 ,have always ran a bus tranny(3 rib), up till now i have ran bus inners to sedan (car)outers, maybe broke 2 cv,s in three years and they where used when i put them on! i notched my spring plates about an inch and jacked up the torsion in the rear on mine about 2 years ago, we ride alot and sometimes i drink to much and beat the hell out of mine on shit i know is impossible 8) if you buy 930 you'll never have to worry, but sounds to me like bus to bus would be great for you, just polish the cv's and dont over extend the ass of your buggy! with that kit down the road you can always upgrade to 930! andi assume your notching of the spring plates is cause your goin to jack the torsion up in the rear, correct?

one bad thing about that kit( i know because i bought the 930 with 3x3 kit) is that its all empi stuff.....cheap bearing and seals....the empi cvs fit sloppy on the empi axles....etc etc dealt with appletree on this prob for about a year with little to no improvements and long long waits to get parts back from them.

hmm... maybe the type 2's cv's would fit the empi axles better?

Dav you had type 1 inners and had your spring plates notched? If you could get away with that surely I can get away with type 2's and plates notched...

bige70chevy, what kinds of problems did the sloppy fit cause you? Were the axles not floating good?

OK here's what I ended up doing. I went ahead and ordered everything from Avery's. I just felt like it was going to be the best choice for me in the long run. Here's the estimate he gave me. (Cut one or two corners *See empi axles)

3x3 trailing arms pr. $495.00
weld on shock mount plates (4) 25.00
2 type 1 to 930 stubs 100.00
2 002/930 trans flanges 100.00
2 ty 1 axle core charge *40.00 or You can send me cores
2 002 flange core charge *20.00 or You can send me cores
4 seals 7.80
4 CV joints GNK 79.00 (316)
Empi 19 1/4 axles 185.00
4 Empi 930 boots (4) 96.00
24 3/8 24 ferry cap bolts 28.80
shipping Est($50-60)

Good news I'm just within my budget. Bad news I didn't leave myself anything for shocks. But, he said its going to take him 30 days to fill this order. So I have a little time to save up for some shocks.

Congrats on doing it right, well, close enough. You wont be disappointed, I bought the same thing from him, minus the empi (junk) axles, opted for say-a-way axles and the arms, built my own. That was 5 years ago, stuff is still on the car with no issues.

Thanks Mike. Yeah I discussed it with the guy Todd. Basically we both thought my 1641 trail buggy most likely wasn't going to eat those empi axles. We'll see....

Here's how the fabricated stuff I got from Avery's looked. BTW I ended up getting SAW's after I heard the reports of play in the fit of the empi axels.

Just for giggles look at what I pulled out of my drivers side arm.
