What about an after market fuel injection system? It will allow you to do your own tuning. With the after market setup you can also add nitrous, water injection, rev limits, fan control and boost control. You can also trouble shoot your own system and look at individual sensors with your laptop PC. Just a thought.

It's not that expensive for what it is. If you can do this wiring harness yourself, go that route, but if you decide you want to pay someone to make a custom one, think about MegaSquirt (I think that's what Huey's running).
It's pretty cool and it costs 200-$300 depending on if you want to do the soldering yourself or you buy a prebuilt kit. You can even program in nitrous
All the software is freeware too. I'm going this route once I get the buggy going and have a bit of money/time.

Yeah, go to MegaManual.com, it'll tell you everything you need to know about it.
Cool stuff.

Looks like your making good progress. I bet your wife is ready to kill you for dragging home another car  I keep eyeballing a link ecu. They are $$$ but very tuneable. I've heard from several guys that have used mega squirt that the tuning software and interface absolutely sucks. It also wouldn't read the factory subi crank sensor. I'd like to play with MS on something but I'm not sure it should be subi for the first try. I finally bought all the parts I need to put my 2.5 back together. I think I'm going to put my 914 together first. I haven't touched the baja project in months. I've got the CJ about finished enough to go ride though.

I decided to stick with the factory ecu for now. If I need more power I may upgrade later. Simplicity is my middle name. :?

I emailed a megasquirt guy and he want all the info below,,,,I aint got a clue...I will just stick with the factory ecu for now :?

1. What year/make/model/engine/tranny? (Pretend you're at the parts store, ordering a starter.) If this isn't the original engine/electronics let me know that too.
2. Are you looking to control fuel only, ignition only, or fuel and ignition? Is there anything beyond these features that you are looking to control - fans or boost, for example?
3. What are the engine details (type, number of cylinders, previously fuel injected or carb'd?)
4. What type of ignition system does your car run- where is the crank angle sensor (CAS) or distributor trigger wheel and what type is it (Optical/LED Sensor? Hall Sensor? VR Sensor?)
5. How many teeth/windows/slots and what orientation does the CAS, crank trigger, and/or distributor wheel have? (any missing? all evenly spaced?)
6. Is there a distributor? Single/Multiple Coils? Coil on Plug?
7. Does this engine have a fast idle valve (IAC)? If so, how many wires are connected to it? Do you know if it is an on/off, pulse width modulated, thermal, or stepper type?
8. Rate yourself 1-5 on technical confidence in yourself. 1 being "I can't paint by numbers" and 5 being "I can probably build a car from scratch if I have the right documentation, and I'm resourceful enough to do some research and find some of my own answers." I need to know this as some of the 'less traveled' roads will require you to make modifications that in some cases I haven't performed myself yet and based on this response it will help me to know whether this type of solution is for you or not. I challenge you to 'stretch yourself' a little bit. You won't ever learn anything (about yourself and your abilities) if you don't try to do things that you're not quite sure you can do... and then find that you can.
9. Are you looking to build your own ECU from a kit or buy a pre-assembled ECU?
10. Are you open to retrofitting a different ignition system such as the Ford EDIS distributorless system or one of our crank trigger kits if it is determined that the MegaSquirt will not properly (or easily) control your factory ignition system? Many factory systems MegaSquirt can simply take control of, some it cannot. EDIS to the rescue! It's cheap, simple and works great!

Hah, well if that isn't enough to scare you away from it, I don't know what is! Honestly, if you were going to go that route, the best way to do it is to find someone who has already done it to that engine, or a similar Subi. MegaSquirt has a forum site that's divided into the different types of engines, I think. That way you could get a base tuning file too.
But, go with the factory harness and get her running, then think about MegaSquirt, because it will most likely be a mini project in itself.

A few questions? How much does that motor weigh? What are you dong for a adapter to the trans. I am assuming you are running a vw bus. How is the low end on those motors, do you have to spool them up or do they make power right at the bottom end? And of course, when is it coming to wellsville so I can see it go?

Best I can find the engine is about the same as Honda V6 ,or double the vw. My ej22 adapter will work. The engine is from what I have read a torque monster. I would love to go to Wellsville,,,maybe when I win a hill climb.

You are right,,that Honda engine is pretty.. I have been working on the harness, ,I will post a pic later,,,,trying to talk myself into working on it some today.... I haven't welded the oil pickup and pan yet,,maybe tomorrow. My son is a much better welder than me and I am waiting on him to come over this weekend. Instigator is making me some flanges for headers. I see that the Honda headers are easy to come by and affordable,,,not the suby H6 though. I'm still shootin to have her in for the Thanksgiving ride 8)

finally got on here. looks like an absolutely awesome project. I've worked on 2 EG33 swaps into other subarus in the last year, and the results are awesome, even just dropped into a 2500lb car (compared to the SVXs almost 3500!) makes for some awesome acceleration. that in a buggy scares me just thinking about it

I just wanted to add that the logic module in subaru ECUs is quite intelligent. pull more air through the MAF, and it'll open those injectors for a bit longer. I know of many people pushing 6-8 psi of boost through EJ22e's with zero other modifications.

the challenge with the EG33 comes with the MAF. it maxes out pretty quick. well, there's another option. stock ECU reprogrammed to use a Nissan Z32 MAF (or 2).

check out the things being done at www.ECUtune.com
