great thread. I'm bookmarking for when I get to this point! People don't say much about the rotors. Do they all have the same dimensions? I'm going to try to stay five wide because I have lug adapters. Seems like I've heard someone say something about backspacing the rim and where the rotor ends up lining up at...is that ever a problem? Do the pads make 100% contact with the rotor? Seems there's a difference in diameter between the Nissan rotors and VW rotors by about 1 in. IIRR. |

Yes there is that difference in the rotor size. Like I said I'm using the Empi rotor. Only little over half the rotor is being used with the 1986 Nissan front caliper pads. But it works VERY well. I'm sure the O.D. and depth will be different on different rotors, that's why you kinda assemble them then mark where to weld the mounting bracket. Maybe somebody with more experience will chime in that could tell us more about caliper and rotor selection

I don't know why but I have this mental image of the pads hanging off the edge. I've seen some different ideas put together, but it seems like this is a lot more straight forward and good looking. Only skill needed really is welding which seems to be a given here. |

LOL.. nothing hanging off. Here is a couple more pics. You can see an extra brace in the middle between the top and bottom mounting bolts running horizontal. Just something I thought that might help.

Just something I thought that might help. How much pad do you have in contact with the rotor? I have a little over half of the pad in contact with my rotor. Will it work or will i need to cut the weld and do it again? |

I would cut and reweld. ALL the pad should be in contact. As long as all the pad is in contact with the rotor it should work as the "factory Nissan or make " intended it to. You can also move the caliper up and down a bit to get the radius of the pad to match the radius of the rotor. Then once the pad is ALL on the rotor you can tack it on and examine it . Making sure it floats freely, doesn't rub anywhere and ALL the pad is in contact with the rotor. |
