Got to drive my buggy through all 4 gears for the first time since new eng/trans combo. Trans make VERY LOUD whining noise in 3rd and 4th gears under load.  I'm assuming i have a bearing concern and i'm thinking 3rd and 4th share a shaft maybe? This is vanagon 6rib. Any help is greatly apreciated.

Yes, 3rd and 4th share a shaft and yes it would be a bearing. Tear down time. Do it now before it gets expensive.

If you don't want to fool with it, send it back in that blue crate.
We'll see what's up with it and give you a $ number.

Mine was doing the same thing. I was hoping I could wait until next year to rebuild but I did not make it. My tranny gave up at D&K. I wonder how much damage I did when I blew up my tranny..

I got another trans. thanks tb. I think i'll use the noisy one to learn and build. Super diff and maybe different gearing after i see how i like stock gearing. I'd like to learn the ins and outs of these myself. I have access to many tools and i'm capable just need a manual(any sugestions apreciated) and a list of things that should be absolutely upgraded while in there. Thanks everyone. Tony

In the past when I had 3rd or 4th hard to deal with, the pinion bearing was going out ,subsequently the r&p went out.The shafts share bearings and if they are mis aligned THE TEETH ARE MIS ALIGNED and you have trouble. You are very right about your bearings.

I usually add a wide flange pinion nut, hand pack 1st, and install thrust plate if all else is good.
