You just about need another trans. I think the only parts from the side shift (assuming your talking about the earlier a/c version) that are compatible are the gears themselves. All the shift rails, forks, detent balls, shift assembly, and case and more im sure are needed from a regular 091.

you can use the main case from the side shift...you just have to drill and tap for a fill plug

Hey Eric, do you have any pics or a website describing what has to be machined?

No, you need shift rails from a 6-rib (the spacing is longer between the detents). As for the intermediate housing, you will need to mill 2 spots on the inside to put bolts to hold the shift bracket and on the nosecone side, you need to mill it flat. I also install a 1/16 spacer under the shift bracket to get it level with the mainshaft bearing boss. You can use a thrust plate and weld a plate to it then drill through a regular 6-rib housing to make a template to drill the side shift housing for the bracket..

thank you for the info eric ive almost got it figured out :D

ok so i think i can get the machine work taken care of and i got to drill and tap the fill plug in the main case and i already have a thrust plate for i can make the template out of and i got the nose cone .....so now i have to get the shift rails and hockey stick and shift bracket along with associated parts ......these shouldnt cost very much i wouldnt think but what i need to know now is will the shift forks and detent pins and springs work out of a 3 rib or do they also have to be 6 rib?

also im thinking about ordering a torsional input shaft and chromoly pinion nut to help the tranny last

The springs and detent balls are the same..no problem. It is also possible to cut the ends from the side shift rails and weld ones on from a front shift trans, but it is kind of hard to do. It is easier to buy the correct ones, and Weddle has plenty and they are not real expensive. Sometimes, I have had to go back and "tweak" my template as the holes were a little off. You will see when you get that far. You might have to bend the selector bracket so the selector will catch the rails properly. You can also grind the socket where the shift ball goes if it hits the housing. I have also seen the shift rails hit the nosecone. If you look inside of the nosecone, there are bosses where the rails COULD hit. Not usually, but it doesn't hurt to check it. Pull each rail out then dry fit the nosecone...
The torsional input shafts are expensive, but will help, plus they look real nice!
If you have any more questions, just ask..

Eric
