i have tried everything to get the stutter out of my engine. i have a stock 1600 DP, 34 pict-3, SVDA, compufire, all the usual suspects. my last resort before dual carbs is to use a full flow in-out oil pump to run the oil through the heat risers. i know it has been done before. what i am interested in is the results people have had, any glitches or tricks to doing it. i am going to just cut the flanges off and weld pipe fittings to it (after thorough cleaning of course). i will also be using a remote oil filter before returning to the case.
Any ideas?

I remember reading some ware (www.dune-buggy.com) about a guy that did sort of what you are talking about. He didn’t have heat risers. I thought he just took a rubber hose and wrapped it around the intake and back to the pump. Your idea sounds a little cleaner looking. I would think if it’s not working with the exhaust heat why would it work with the oil heat. Wouldn’t the oil be much cooler than the exhaust?

I seriously doubt your stutter is from lack of intake manifold pre-heat. I have ran many stock buggy engines over the years without intake manifold heat with great results. I would continue to search for your problem before you venture out on this project. I do not think this will help.

I'm with Roy, you have something out of whack somewhere.
I wouldn't run oil through that preheat tube personally.
I don't thing the pipe goes all the way from side to side continuously.
At least the aftermarket versions don't.
I'd be afraid of a tube pulling out of the casting.

Did you try the 34 mod for the 009?
I see you have a SVDA but it couldn't hurt.

i currently dont have any preheat. the stock manifolds go clear through and and are in there solid. the aftermarket ones pull out. ive looked at the heads, no cracks, the intake, no leaks, the carb is new. the dizzy is new. im at a loss here. unless the dizzy diaphragm isn't pulling enough advance. at any set rpm it runs like a top. upon acceleration it stutters. my friends say i'm being too picky but ive driven vw's all my life on and off road and i expect better than what iam getting.
i dont know?

i tried the 009 out of the box and it was really bad.

Im with Roy and Gary on this one. Once the engine is warmed up and the Outside air temperature is above 30 degrees the heating of the manifold has little to do with it. The whole purpose of the heat is to keep the fuel from condensing on the walls of the intake manifold on its way to the cylinder while the engine is cold. What have you done with your jetting to correct the problem?

Dont take this the wrong way however your wasting your time checking heads, doing leak down test etc. without jetting and adjusting the carb first. You can not bolt on a carb and expect it to work. All engines are different. What color are your plugs? Black and sooty is rich and white is to lean. You want a tan color. Does it do it at any RPM or just off Idel?

Something that you need to check is the accel. pump squirter tube in the carburetor. Make sure you are getting a good stream of fuel out of this. ALSO check to make sure this fuel stream is going straight down to the bottom of the carb. at the butterfly. Sometimes on new carburetors this tube is installed incorrectly and the fuel stream is hitting the side of the carb. body. This will cause the problem you describe. I think this is where your problems are.

I have had both problems that Roy had said about the squirter and the accelerator pump not being adjusted right. More of the accelerator pump not being adjusted right than the other. Check that first.
Good luck!
