I had the opportunity to run my buggy on a chassis dyno last night. I have been wanting to do this for a long time. My son works at a "Ricer Speed Shop" and hooked me up with some dyno time.
Off came the V Cleats and on went the drag slicks. My main question was weather or not the muffler and supertrapp I installed was hurting my performance or not. We did two pulls with the muffler/spark arrestor on and then removed it and did two more pulls.
I was pretty shocked at the difference in performance, hardly any at all! I only lost 2 ft/lbs of torque with the muffler installed. I am very pleased with these results.
When I bought my place in the mountains, I wanted to quiet my buggy down some and I also wanted everyone that comes up to ride to have a spark arrestor and/or muffler. Since I installed this I have been wondering if it was affecting my power. It really didn't "feel" like it was but I wanted to know for sure. Now I know.

Post your numbers, would like to see them. I believe people will be surprised at the numbers a stroker will pull on the dyno.

See you at D&K

Ok, Ok. I'm easy.

110 ft. lbs at 2000 rpm.
130 ft. lbs from 3000 to 5500.

That's about 150-160 ft. lbs at the crank. Motor is on pump gas and timing is only at 31 deg. Motor is 3 1/2 years old now as well. I was pretty pleased with the results. I did not build this motor for maximum power, I built it to live a long life.

3 1/2 years and still run those numbers is great. Did you build the motor yourself or some one else? Mine is two years old and still going strong. Looking forward to D&K.

Hey Larry,

It's one of those Chinese cheapos from Pacific Customs, although, I added 10 extra discs to it. It's about 10" long and has a muffler in it as well. I was shocked.

That sounds just like the ones we tried. Amazing what your ears can make you think vs. whats really going on in a motor! Thats the reason I always use a timing light and synchrometer. You might think you can set those systems by ear, but can you really?! Not as well as you can with the right equipment!

Yeah, I built my own motor. LOL

Cool I have helped with two motors but I wouldn't attempt it on my own right now. I wish I could would save me on labor cost when I tear this one down and turn it into a stroker. I have thought of just adding a turbo and redoing a few things.

Now Roy has me thinking. So I arranged some Dyno time for this Saterday. Lets just see what a 70,000 + mile 2.2 Subaru can do.

Well here are the numbers I ran. Again this is a 2.2 L non turbo Subaru that has 70,000 + mile on it. It ran 104 ftlb. from 2500 to 5000 rpm. It says here the HP is 95 at 5000 rpm. It was consistant over 4 pulls. The operator of the Dyno really knows his stuff, This was done at Speed Nation in Pittsburgh. He told me that there is a bunch more I can do with this motor and using the stock computer I can get another 50 HP to the ground.

I will openly admit that I do not know alot about motors. I know the basics and I could rebuild one and it will run perfect. But I do not understand the the art of getting more power out of one. Anyway my silly question is when did it change from HP to torque. A few years ago noone talked torque, just HP. Now everyone is telling me how much torque their motor has. I guess I think power is power. When I looked up the numbers on the Caddy motor I have it said 425 hp and 525 ft lbs. torque. Why the two ratings?

I HAVE COMPLETE FAITH I DAVE (MY ENGINE GUY) THAT I DO NOT NEED PAPER TO TELL ME IM GETTING ALL I CAN GET FROM MY SHADETREE 1915. IT ALWAYS HAS THE BALLS WHEN I NEED HORESPOWER. NO NEED FOR PAPERS SO SAVE A TREE

I could write a book on this subject. Basically, horsepower is a function of torque. Torque is what gets your wheels moving when you dump the clutch.
For a woodsbuggy, torque is what you are after, lots of it...... at the lowest possible rpm range.
Some may disagree but that is what I know.

That is on a chassis dyno, at the wheels. I think I might have screwed that up Roy. He was refering to torque. And I don't really care about the numbers, It is a bench mark on how things have progresed. I started with a lame 1600cc VW that couldn't get out of it's own way. For what I spent on the engine, rad, adaptor and the trinkets I needed to hook the Subie up, I couldn't build a VW to do the same thing for twice the money. I haven't been doing this buggy stuff very long so I'm not a loyalist to Air Cooled engines. I'm loyal to what ever works, you know the best bang for the buck and right now the Subie works real good. In fact the damn thing works so good I get to put an extra 60 or 70 pounds up on the front end to hold it down, folks are seeing way to much of my underside

So torque is what you feel when you get in the gas.

I always looked at it this way; Torque is what gets ya there, Horse Power is what keeps ya there.
